Multi-purpose: The tricycle is designed to be used in urban areas where a regular patrol car is too big for the job.

London: Renowned for its two-wheeled, self-balancing scooter, Segway recently revealed a £13,000 (R12.77 L) electric tricycle which it hopes could replace the patrol car. The SE-3 Patroller is designed for police and private security patrols where the rider has to constantly mount and dismount.

It is expected to replace traditional patrol cars and two-wheeled Segways in areas such as airport security, offering better stability and a more visible presence.

“Our goal was to bring a feature-rich, quality-made three-wheel vehicle to law enforcement and public safety customers at a competitive price,” said Rod Keller, President, Segway. “Based on the company’s reputation for innovative design and quality workmanship, we anticipate the market’s reception to the SE-3 Patroller to be very strong.”

The patroller is powered by multiple rechargeable lithium ion batteries that can be charged at any standard electrical outlet or swapped out for replacement batteries to allow for continuous use. However, the firm has refused to reveal how fast the gadget will go.

This new three-wheeler feature independent direct rear wheel drive can travel in reverse and turn in a very tight radius. It also includes rugged Whelen emergency lights, headlight, brake light, siren and lockable storage.

The patroller is also equipped with a 4.3” colour display that is sunlight-readable. It provides the rider with vibrant, easy-to-understand operational data including speed, battery life and distance travelled.
