Wholesome burgers, sandwiches, pastries, ice creams and coffees is what this newly opened Church Street hangout is all about
Cake Zone, the newest hotspot on Church Street is quite popular already, from what we saw on a Saturday evening. It may not be one of those swanky gourmet cake shops but had quite a tasteful selection at its bakery counter.
One of the first things you will notice is the brightly coloured yellow and purple walls that are an instant mood lifter. There are high and low tables to choose from. We opted for one of the high tables paired up with bar stools and soon realised we weren't going to have a menu placed on the table.u00a0 All the available options are placed on the counter, and you get to choose exactly what catches your eye. On offer are burgers, sandwiches, puffs, pastries, rolls, ice creams, coffees and more.
We had stopped by for an evening snack and opted for a Chicken Burger (R 70) and Vegetable Sandwich (R 65). The burger that came was quite a pleasant surprise. A hearty and sizzling chicken patty was sandwiched in a soft and large burger bun, doused in oodles of mayonnaise and finished with a few lettuce leaves.
The burger was soft, crumbly and delicious and we suggest you dig into this one, sizzling hot, right when it arrives. The sandwich was sumptuous in quantity and came with a filling of chopped vegetables, cheese and mayonnaise. It had a strong flavour of peppers and the vegetables provided the right crunch. To pair with the snacks, we ordered a glass of Mango juice (R 55). This was a glassful of rich sweetened mango pulp that did help in cooling down the spices that the tid bits got along.
We then asked for a Chocolate Tart (R 35) and an Apple Pie (R 60). The tart that came in its bite-sized version looked quite tempting and turned out to be sufficiently gooey. The crust though was crisp and bland, making the combination taste like a mix of the crunch and the sweetness. The pie was quite huge, crumbly and loaded with pieces of apple and nuts. Warm and mildly sweet it formed the perfect end to an early evening meal.

Creme & Crust
This eatery serves black forest cakes, muffins, Belgium dark chocolate pastries along with chicken quiches and other savoury nibbles in giant sizes. Try the Kit Kat Pastry (R 120) or the Raspberry Cheese Cake (R 150). The cheesecake is neither too creamy nor sweet. With a thin coat of raspberry compote on the top and a crusty chocolate biscuit-like base at the bottom, the Raspberry Cheesecake goes well with Darjeeling Tea (R 50). Pieces of Kit Kat greet you as soon as you bite into this gooey and chocolaty three layered pastry. The presence of wafer chocolates in the pastry makes a little crunchy with the right amount of light chocolate cream and a spongy cake base.
