Mughal nobility seated on elephants engage in a hunting round, while some village belles play games. These are not scenes from some hot-selling video-game, but picks from the collection of dioramas at the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum. Made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these dioramas captured colonial Indian life in great detail. The pluralism of festivals and attires depicted in them proves that we are a nation of excess.

What writer and nature enthusiast Katie Bagli wants budding storytellers to do is to look at these tableaus and spin yarns around them. Her workshop, called Weaving Tales, is a unique introduction to the Museum's collection and creative writing for children in the nine to fourteen age group.
"After a guided tour of the Museum, participants will be able to create a story in groups. The dioramas are perfect for understanding setting in a story," says Bagli, who has authored books like Intriguing Insects and How Blue is Our Planet. From maverick to genius
Albert Einstein had famously said, "What is right is not always popular and what is popular is not always right.' Professor Sudipta Maiti of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research will stand in agreement with this. Maiti, who heads the Department of Chemical Sciences at TIFR, will talk about some 'ridiculous' suggestions by scientists that went onto become one of the most amazing discoveries in science.
"History is replete with instances of many of the greatest minds in science, who were laughed all the way from the lab and sometimes to the grave, because not a soul could comprehend their ideas which would later be proven true," he says. He will share delightful anecdotes about scientists from Gregor Mendel, pioneer of genetics to Galileo, who supported the Copernican theory till death.
"You might be surprised to know that Alzhemiers' is caused by certain proteins in the body. Proteins are always seen as something positive so initially people found it difficult to accept this theory, until it was proven," he says. As he shares these tales, the professor will also give you a peek into his own fascinating field of work. Maiti is currently looking for the physical reasons behind diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Celebrate butterflies
11 am – 1 pm: Can a fragile butterfly carry with it lessons for life? Is it even right to call it fragile? In this session of Chai and Why, listen to Krushnamegh Kunte, faculty at TIFR Bengaluru, as he takes you through the mysteries of the butterfly and its many tricks, right from mimicry to warning predators.
