3 questions with Rudy Wallang, co-member of Shillong-based band Soulmate

'We tribals have music in our blood'

1. What led to the formation of Soulmate? Do you guys idolise anyone?
Soulmate was formed in Shillong in October 2002 when Tips (Tipriti Kharbangar) and me decided to form a band dedicated to playing Blues and spreading awareness about this important genre of music. As far as the choice of genre is concerned, I feel we didn’t choose Blues, it chose us. We don’t idolise anyone but we are very inspired by a whole lot of musicians and artistes.

2. It’s been 10 years since the formation of the band; any big plans this year for the decade celebration?
Till now, we’ve released two albums, Shillong and Moving On. So, the biggest plan we have this year is to release our third album in September.

3. The North East churns out many talented musicians time and again. What is it about the region that gets people hooked to music?
I think it’s our closeness with nature. Also, we tribals have music in our blood. It’s all around us, every day. Right now, I can hear music playing in my neighbour’s home. Isn’t that beautiful?

Soulmate will perform live in Mumbai on June 12 at Blue Frog, Mathuradas Mills Compound, Lower Parel.u00a0
