Situated outside Churchgate railway station, it is one of Mumbai's iconic restaurants that gets its name from Ghai and Lamba, who also started Kwality Ice Cream in Delhi before that.
Ever since then, the legacy has been carried forward by the Lambas through Sunil Lamba, and now his sons - Dhruv and Divij Lamba. In an interview to mid-day.com, Dhruv says the renovation wasn't just a fresh coat of paint but a thoughtful journey to embrace the future while staying true to their roots. They noticed a shift in the city's demographics, with a younger, vibrant generation seeking new experiences.
The Chicken A La Kiev, one of their most popular Continental dishes, has been on the menu since 1956 and continues to remain there as a favourite. The other dishes that have been retained on the menu is Gaylord's famous mashed potatoes, Kasturi Murgh and many others while also including newer variations such as Veg Au Gratin. Personally, Dhruv and Divij love the Chicken Ala Kiev, Roast lamb, Lobster Thermidor and Gaylord Kebabs.
The third-generation Lambas say they remember spending countless hours at the restaurant, witnessing the joy it brought to our patrons. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the clatter of cutlery were like a comforting lullaby for them. They even have fond memories of attending events with our families.
The cocktail menu includes some favourites as they introduce new variations like the Cinnamon Old Fashioned, Guava Picante and more that will appeal to people with diverse palates.
The popularity of the restaurant over the years has seen some of India's biggest celebrities like Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar and Pandit Ravi Shankar enjoy a meal there.
