Nimmy Raphael’s play “Adishakti’s Urmila” gives voice to an oft-overlooked character: Lakshman’s wife Urmila. In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Urmila agrees to be in ‘nidra’ for the fourteen years of his exile so that Lakshman can be sleepless to protect Ram and Sita. In Raphael’s version, we get a peek into the mind of Urmila as opposed to the perfect docility she is shown to have in Valmiki’s version.
