A look back at the genesis of motion pictures takes us to the 1890s. But the advent of the moving camera was accompanied by a lack of technological know-how. So, the movies that were made then -- such as Journey to the Moon and Arrival of the Train -- were under five minutes in duration. After the turn of the century, however, films gradually became longer.
But Cyrus Dastur, founder of short film club Shamiana, feels that in today's time, both full-length movies and shorts can co-exist. And the latest event through which he's exercising this conviction is being organised in collaboration with Cottons & Satins, a Worli-based textiles store that will screen three award-winning short films this evening. These are the Oscar-winning Sing, Oscar-nominated La Femme et le TGV, and multi-award winning Leela.
"Shorts are making a comeback of sorts today since attention spans are falling, and more and more alternative venues are willing to screen them," Dastur says Be that as it may, he adds that once an audience member attends a Shamiana screening, s/he always comes back for more.
