Speak up, speak out
Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 7.30 pm: Ankur Vikal, Sapna Bhavnani, Priyanka Bose and Sneha Jawale have overcome personal battles to stage the play, Nirbhaya, which is based on the gang rape of the 19-year-old physiotherapy student at Delhi in December 2012. The play has been directed by acclaimed South Africa-born writer-director Yael Farber.
In December 2000, Jawale was making tea at her Mumbai flat when her husband and his brother set her on fire after a dowry demand. Today Jawale has moved on — she is a tarot card reader who writes dialogues for Marathi
TV serials.
In August 2013, Jawale and the other actors shared their stories at Edinburgh Festival, the world’s largest arts festival, in London. She was not alone, and was joined by four other women on stage — actors Poorna Jagannathan, Priyanka Bose, Sapna Bhavnani and Japjeet Kaur along with co-actor Ankur Vikal. “Imagine telling a stranger what you have buried deep inside. I underwent hypnosis to talk about my story. But what motivated us was that the play is about letting go off the shame,” Bhavnani said in a previous interview to this newspaper.

To comfort her six-year-old cousin Cenk, who was bullied on his first day at school, Canan tries to cheer him up by telling him the fantastic story of how a small Turkish family discovered a land populated by blond giants who ate pigs, where rats on leashes were taken on walks, where water was called Coca-Cola, and where everyone spoke gibberish — a land called Almanaya.

Not for the faint-hearted
Until April 30, 11am to 7pm; Sunday closed:
LeT tHe bRAinFly — had some difficulty reading this? Welcome to the world of artiste Nandita Kumar, whose surreal journey through evolution in her new show will provide the viewer with similar, unusual experiences.
Her experiments in collage, live action, hand-drawn and paint on film present themselves as a visual story-board. Through these renditions, Kumar “culls collages of a timeless world, and draws inherent correlations between the self and the dimensions of the cultural diaphragm.”
Through her paintings, Kumar tries to explore the idea of the brain transgressing through the body, which is able to reconfigure itself. Kumar thus tries to “unplug cultural programming.”

Cross over time with art
Monday:
11 am-7pm: Attend an exhibition of paintings, Explosion of Love, by Rajwant KaurMann at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery, which is on till today. According to the artist, art is the domestication of one’s energy into a visual form. She uses this energy to energise viewers who have made a connection with it. KaurMann paints non-representational abstract art, which she believes has the scope of crossing over time and geographical barriers.
Ask her about her inspiration, and she says, “It is not just the paint, but the handling of paint and its interaction with the canvas that inspires me. What gets painted is not mine alone. The outcome is from both of us — the canvas and me.”
