More than 14 underground rap artistes will perform at a new Rap battle championship, Underground Battle (Rap), starting this Saturday. Organised by Carlito (Siddhesh Mestry), a former rapper and founder of Underground Studioz, the battle aims to revive the underground Rap scene in the city.

Mostly, Underground is a name given to artistes, who don’t get to perform on real stages (including most of the popular clubs in the city), their music though, mostly original, is not commercial, and they aren’t paid for their performances. A scenario, says Carlito, is common with most Rap/Hip-Hop artistes in the city. “Most clubs willingly give money to DJs, but for rappers it’s very difficult, even more so for the solo artistes without a manager,” he says.

Despite this, Carlito says that the underground Hip-Hop/Rap scene in Mumbai, is quite vibrant, and is growing every day with several new artistes forming their own crews. “But there are not enough venues for these artistes to showcase their talent. This Saturday’s event is the first of the many battles that we are planning to host every month, to give some exercise to these underground Hip-Hop/Rap artistes,” informs Carlito.

The former Rapper was part of the Rap/Hip-Hop crew, Underground Rappers League, which performed in the city during 2009-2011 before their split in 2011. The crew used to organise Underground battles back then as well. The crew included artistes like Morpheus, Kick Ass, OZ, Slim Bonez and Carlito, and Laukik as a music producer. “We were the only crew from Mumbai, who performed outside the city. We would make our own original songs as well as tracks. Today, most of us have moved on to our own solo projects or taken up different careers, but I feel we can at least, bring the Underground battles back to life,” says Carlito.

“The Underground Battle is open to everyone. If you think you got what it takes to be a rapper, the stage is open for you,” he adds. The first edition of Underground Battle (Rap) will have DJ Sy on the turntable, and rappers Shaikhspeare and D’Evil (Munky Rhymz) will play the hosts of the evening. The two will also perform some of their tracks at the challenge. Bobkat of Bombay Bassment will judge the event.
