When Director Navzar Eranee told me the video of Nanok's Lay You Down had the concept of two girls making out, I instantly said,'Yes, I am doing it'," says choreographer Karishma Chavan. "It had to be aesthetically done and couldn't have any kind of a sleazy element." The video in question has singers Monica Dogra and Anushka Manchanda kissing, feeling each other and dancing to musician Nanok's tunes and, as we discovered, to Chavan's directions. The style is contemporary, and the feel is sensual and sexy, and never seedy.
Chavan referenced the shoot from a gay porn clip she saw, to take inspiration for lighting and the positions. "We made them shoot the kissing scene first, just so we could break the ice, and after that it was easier. The brief was just to make them look like they were in love, and were getting turned on looking at each other dancing. And of course, Monica and Anushka just took off — they were awesome."

Chavan, 30, who has many advertisements under her belt including ones with actors Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar, and has been signed on to choreograph the Sonam Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Veere De Wedding, is also an Instagram celebrity. With almost 14,000 followers, she usually posts dance videos that show her moving sexily despite her "weight". "So many people comment saying 'Why is she dancing!! She is so fat.' But does dance have anything to do with being fat? I can move as fast and as well as anyone else, and I have a brain, thank you!" The dancer started her career at the age of 12 when her parents, who were part of cabin crew for Air India, admitted her to Shiamak Davar's dancing classes. "I danced there for almost two years, and though I really wanted to be in his company, I never got a chance. It was because I was the non-sports bra-chaddi-wearing-dancer he usually has in his group." She started teaching aerobics, after which she tried her hand at dancing for Terence Lewis and got rejected there too. "I call myself the biggest reject. But I thank these guys because if they hadn't rejected me, I would have never pushed this hard, and entered the industry."
Along with choreographing ads, Chavan won Dance Premiere League with her group, and has done stints on Nach Baliye and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa amongst others. But it's her workshops that have also made her a hit amongst her target audience of wannabe dancers. "I do the workshops for my own creative fulfillment. It's where everything is under my control — the music, the aesthetic. People who come to my class must be ready to challenge themselves." It's this bindaas vibe that has made her a hit on YouTube. "We put up one video and people reacted so well. And then we just kept going on. The good thing is that the good comments outweigh the bad ones. It's unfortunate when people point fingers at me, where they themselves are not picture perfect." Chavan says that Instagram aside, even the industry judges her on her weight. "It's not friendly for big girls at all. People care about how you look and how thin you are. But I don't care. Sexiness comes naturally to me, and dance becomes my front to bring it out well." For now, she is happy inspiring the hundreds of young girls who follow her. "Just looking at me, the way I am, gives them confidence. They change their mind about themselves after looking at my dance videos. That's brilliant."
