While 'recycle' may be the buzzword for most environmentalists, here's a group of Mumbaikars that think differently. They are organising India's first ever 'upcycling' festival, called The Kabaad Mela. About a month ago, The Kabaad Mela had a phase one that had organised competitions to create innovative upcycled products, using plastic, cardboard, rubber tyres, scrap metals and so on.

Harshil Vora, the brains behind this festival, says that it is part of an environmental initiative undertaken by his company Pro-Innovate. Speaking of how the idea struck him, Harshil says, "I had visited Auroville back in February, which is where I got introduced to the concept of upcycling." He adds, "The whole point is to redefine the purpose of waste, think of a frugal innovation."

Among the several pieces of 'frugal innovation' the mela will feature is a home theatre made out of a shoe-box. There is also going to be a street play on upcycling, music events and workshops centred around the theme.
