This might be an ideal opportunity to introduce children to the wonders and delights that lie inside a museum and debunk the idea of it being a dark, intimidating space filled with lifeless exhibits. The Museum in Me, an interactive engagement for parents and children (ages 6-10) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, is going to introduce children to the world of museums and encourage an interest in history, next week.

According to Extensions Arts, the organisers of the event, parents along with their children have to find clues hidden in the Museum’s permanent collections of artifacts as a part of the plan. Participants can choose to pace themselves however they like during the process. Each parent-child group will get a map and directions to follow. The map will take them through the museum and get them to investigate objects for an hour-and-a-half session.
“There could be a clue leading to a wooden cat and one will need to find out what the cat’s dress is called. Or, in the section of miniature paintings, the clue might lead to artifacts from the Peshwa era and will require one to find out locals names like matka,” shares Sananda Mukhopadhyaya, founder of Extensions Arts.

“This will give an opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time with each other while engaging in a creative exercise. This experience will be recreational and educational,” she adds. Mukhopadhyaya adds, the initiative is launched with the objective of creating arts based encounters for children and adults that are not just focused on acquiring skills. She, however, hopes that parents and guardians will play with the children as equals and not dominate the decisions. Mukhopadhyaya says that the group is keen to subsidise the engagements, keeping ticket prices as low or high as movie tickets to encourage families to make this an alternative to going to the mall.
