IndiEarth, a group that aims to address the challenges of independent Indian musicians and filmmakers, will be screening three movies in the city.

Sonya Mazumdar, CEO of Earthsync/Indiearth, says, "We try to provide a balance in terms of the movies shown. We try to promote independent filmmakers and support them. Through these movies we want to promote different concepts of movie-making like cinematography, direction, writing."

The first film to be screened is Wives and Wives, by filmmaker Pramod Pati. The three- minute animated short depicts a humorous story written around a modern bachelor in India (early 1960s) who visits a marriage bureau to select a bride-to-be.

It is based on the concept of Young India as imagined in the films of Films Division, in the early years. Says Mazumdar, "It is a fantastic movie as it was made in the early 1960s when animation was not commonly known."

The second film is Mombattiyaan by filmmaker Krishand. The film is based on a guitarist without a song, a drunk off-shore drilling engineer and his friend, a software engineer. Their paths cross in the shadow of the Delhi rape incident.

The third movie is City of Photos by filmmaker Nishtha Jain. The documentary explores the little-known ethos of neighbourhood photo studios in Indian cities, discovering imaginary worlds in the smallest of spaces.

The film focusses on how tiny, shabby studios that appear to be stuck in a time warp, turn out to be places throbbing with energy.

Also highlighted are the surprising mix of people who choose to frequent these places and the backdrops they enjoy posing against and the props they choose.
