'Rakesh And Friends' to perform a show for charity

Fusion collective Rakesh And Friends performs in aid of cancer and rainwater harvesting in rural Maharashtra

BEST known for blending Indian classical tunes with world music, Rakesh And Friends, is a treat to watch live. Comprising Rakesh Chaurasia (flute), Gino Banks (drums), Satyajit Talwalkar (tabla), Sheldon D’Silva (bass guitar), Sanjoy Das (guitar) and Sangeet Haldipur (keyboard and vocals), the band will perform a show for charity today.

“This is our first concert of 2017, and what better way to start the new season than with a charity show. We will be performing to raise funds for the treatment of kids suffering from cancer (Rose and Time & Talents Club, a charitable organisation) and to contribute towards rainwater harvesting measures in rural Maharashtra,” says Chaurasia.

The musician, who is veteran flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s nephew, adds, “We’ll present classical ragas in a contemporary style. The aim is to ensure that music lovers across age groups enjoy it. We will also showcase two new, unreleased compositions,” he adds.

Banks is also excited about the show. “It’s an important concert for me because the causes we’re working for are significant. I feel proud to be able to contribute towards creating awareness and raising funds for children with cancer,” says the drummer. Meanwhile, Haldipur feels proud that he is able to promote independent music. “Such shows help us keep the tradition of non-film music alive and kicking in the country,” he sums up.
