“India is a photographer’s delight. Culture changes every few kilometres and there is endless diversity. Raghu Rai is a photographer who has travelled the country from end to end and this is reflected in his oeuvre,” says Mukesh Parpiani, head, Photography and Gallery, NCPA.

A collection of Rai’s work from his travels will be exhibited at the gallery till October 3, with a session helmed by the master this evening. The session will be a free and open one where the curious get a chance to ask questions about the photographer and his experiences with photography. “It is not often that Mumbai gets a chance to interact with Rai. So we have kept the session open for all kinds of questions,” Parpiani says.

Rai says that the photographs in the collection were born out of the stoppages in his journeys for some other woks of journalism. “I did not go after them; these images nudged me towards them. Even while heading for an assignment, you do not stop being a sensitive human being. In my three decades as a photojournalist, I also shot all kinds of things like rocks, clouds and trees that formed beautiful moments,” he explains.

Rai says that in the interactive session, he will look forward to talk about how in the age of digital photography and advanced tools, one’s fundamental instrument is still the sensitive eye and basic skills. “It is good to have wings to fly but one needs to be aware that one has to come back to the ground each time,” Rai adds.

The exhibition is a part of Artistique, an annual event by the group, Asian Photography that aims to encourage the culture of taking pictures as art. The winning pictures are exhibited with the photos by professionals, providing a platform for aspiring photographers.

The first exhibition with Rai’s collection was kicked off on World Photography day in August this year in Kolkata and was received with great response. The interactive session at the event was streamed live on social media and had a 250-strong live audience.
