The holy city of Varanasi has been a muse for many painters, photographers and cinematographers in the past, with the gorgeous temples that line the ghats of the Ganges being one of the most prominent features.

Photographer Arun Kumar Mishra’s current show, titled Banaras: More Ancient Than Time, aims to depict that the city has more images than temples and ghats on the banks of the river Ganges.

“I have captured many faces of men and women, Hindus and Muslims, young and old, Gods and animals, etc. My pictures show a different facet of Banaras.

The images of a man in a mask of a clown, a boy teaching other boys in a class comprising Hindu and Muslim children, a cow praying in front of a temple, a modern scooter in front of an old house, boys studying on a tablet, etc, show how the old and new live together,” shares Mishra.
