There's the fusion one sees on dance reality shows, where participants often throw in a few superficially imitated Kathak or Bharatanatyam mudras, only to go back to foot-stomping beats, making the purist squirm.


And then there are choreographies, where danseuses firmly rooted in their art take the classical form to another level. Witness one such performance, Swaraah, tomorrow, where accomplished Kathak dancer Rachana Yadav tries to break boundaries in choreography, movements and music, while staying well within the grammar of the classical dance form.


The music by Susmit Sen (founder member of Indian Ocean) and Samiullah Khan, with its unpredictable turns woven along with traditional Kathak music, hints at what to expect. A disciple of Aditi Mangaldas and Pandit Jai Kishan Maharaj, Yadav has had many successful shows in Delhi.
