Young Australian designers join hands with artisans from Gujarat and Bengal to create a unique collection of handmade textiles

Taking the strength of Indian weaving and dyeing traditions to Australia is a unique textile collaboration between Indian artisans and Australian designers.

Lead by Australian master weaver, Liz Williamson, a host of young Australian designers have been working with artisan communities from Gujarat and Bengal to come up with textiles that merge different sensibilities.

This project has been conducted as a part of the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia study programme. The results of this unique partnership will be presented at Artisans’ in collaboration with Australian Consulate General.
A film by one of the collaborators, Natasha Knight, titled One Fable, which illustrates how she started her craft business, will also be screened.

Other designers include Bee Bowen, who will exhibit a range of eco-dyes and naturally dyed scarves developed during a residency with Jabber Khatri in Bhuj, Gujarat; Ro Cook will exhibit a range of printed and dyed lengths of tableware, tablecloths and runners, inspired by the colours, carvings and landscapes of Gujarat; Blake Griffiths will exhibit a range of Jamdani scarves woven in West Bengal, as well as a new range of appliqué scarves made specifically for the exhibition. Williamson’s works will also be on display, which include embroidered designs and woven scarves.

The embroideries are from her Alankar exhibition held in Sydney in April this year; the scarves, a new range of designs made for the exhibition, are a part of collaboration with groups in West Bengal since 2007.
