“When we were in college inâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088Ahmedabad, we would endlessly talk about making a film. We planned and debated the script and moments, we thought of characters and actors who could perform them but eventually the film was never made. That is why we decided that this festival will have a time limit to ensure that many such plans materialise,” says Ritam Bhatnagar, the founder of India Film Project, a film festival that has received over 1,200 films this year.

The entrants for the festival were given a theme – this year’s theme was, On Top Of The World — and they had to make a film on it in the next 50 hours.

In the last five years, since the inception of the festival, thousands of professionals and amateurs have sent films for the festival, as the options for entry are wide. And anything from a DSLR to a mobile phone can become adequate kit for making a film. Bhatnagar says that even viewing so many films (from 20 countries) is an experience he cherishes and there is a lot he gets to learn about the new filmmakers and the youth. “There are a lot more films these days that document personal experiences. It is interesting because there is a marked change even in the last five years. People now are not shying away from putting their lives out there,” he says.

This weekend, the winners of this year’s festival will be decided and these 15 films will be screened at the ceremony. The winners will also get a chance to work with a big brand on an advertisement. The finale also has a series of events with top names from the film and Internet entertainment industry in the city like Culture Machine, Comedy Factory, Screenpatti, Terribly Tiny Tales and Adhiraj Bose.

“The idea was to get a host of new generation of content creators. Filmmaking is not just restricted to cinema and short films, now YouTube videos and web series are also a part of it. So, we thought that this would be an important series of sessions for young and aspiring filmmakers,” he explains.
