The saas-bahu conflict that's a staple of Indian television doesn't quite resonate with millennials. Nonetheless, we recognise that certain fissures might crop up between a newly married man and his in-laws given the generation gap. Yet, unless either party has been sent from the depths of hell, there is a mutual sense of acceptance that lies at the core of the relationship, which helps keep trouble away from paradise. That's the premise of a web series called What the Folks, launched by Dice Media last month.

"Nikhil [the protagonist] comes to Mumbai, and his in-laws are extremely well-intentioned about him being there. But there is this whole thing in India about treating your damaad [son-in-law] like an alien from Mars and giving him special treatment. It's about that, and how it creates situations that are uncomfortable in a very funny way," Ruchir Arun, the director, says about the series.

This discomfiture often leads to overcompensation in a pehle-aap kind of manner. For instance, when Nikhil accidentally dents his father-in-law's car, he tries making up for it by calling an electrician to fix the wiring in the house, which leads to a blackout eventually. The more he tries to score brownie points with them, the more he's left with egg on his face. But will he ultimately get over his jitters, and will his in-laws finally stop treating him like he is the queen of England? Find out when the fifth and final episode of the first season releases this Thursday.
