Religious and mythological deities have served as muses for artists for ages. And with Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, Manisha Nene, assistant director (gallery) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), has curated a special exhibition, titled From Temple to Home Celebrating Ganesha, to delve into the iconography behind the tusked Hindu deity.

Nene’s involvement with the exhibition started with the proposal that she made when she was part of the International Training Programme (ITP) at the British Museum (BM).
What’s interesting to know is that this exhibition was first conceived for the BM and was subsequently, held from February 27 till May 25 at the Museum. The BM exhibition, comprising four exhibits, will also be travelling to four other museums in UK starting September. Nene has now re-curated this exhibition for CSMVS comprising exhibits from the Mumbai museum’s collection.
“Ganesha has been a part of various mediums of art, be it print, sculpture or painting. We wanted to discuss the iconography of Ganesha and display these different mediums too. The iconography has been explained using line drawings, while the exhibition includes seven exhibits,” she explains. The main exhibit is a 12th century stone sculpture from Hoysala, Karnataka.
