In a seven-minute film titled The Repentance, 13-year-old Aamir Shaikh, a film buff from Mumbai, narrates the tale of a man who time travels to warn himself of the future. The young writer-director has shot the film entirely on his iPad at his home. This film, along with 53 others, will be screened at the debut edition of the three-day Filmingo International Short Film Festival, starting tomorrow at Ravindra Natya Mandir. It has been organised by the non-profit Prayog Malad in association with film academician Ashok Rane, to provide a platform for new talent.
From Italian, French and Kashmiri to Hindi and Bengali language films, the screenings will highlight a wide range of subjects and genres. "A film called Yellow Tin Can Telephone is about a girl with an over sensitivity of hearing and a boy who has an overdeveloped sense of association of colours. Another is about an army officer and a terrorist, who are badly injured and seek refuge in the same house," informs Preshit Deorukhkar, member of the organising team. The line-up also includes screenings of shorts made by FTII students along with a few Indian films picked from Short Film Corner archive at the Cannes Film Festival. A master-class with filmmaker Vikas Desai is also part of the programme.
"Two months back, we received over 167 entries from across the world based on announcements via social media," says Deorukhkar. An in-house jury picked 54 films to be screened at the fest, and later, sifted 15 from these, which will be showcased as part of in-competition category. At the fest, a jury headed by renowned children's filmmaker Vinod Ganatra, will pick top five films, which will be sent to the Short Films Corner at Cannes next year.
Filmingo also aims to groom filmmakers to take part in the Young Talent Campus of Berlin International Film Festival 2017. While veteran actor-director Subodh Bhave will be present for the opening ceremony, Kiran Shantaram will be part of the curtain call for the fest.
