Carter Road will turn into an art gallery

Art by the Sea, a three-day event that begins at Bandra's Carter Road promenade today, allows you to watch artists create works from start to finish, and take them home

Imagine watching an artist paint by the sea, getting wowed by it, and finally, taking the artwork home. Le Sutra, a boutique hotel in Bandra will create an art inspiration along the Carter Road promenade, starting today, called Art by the Sea. It will see participation by a number of artists like Nilesh Vede, Ranjit Khurmi, Vijay Belgave, Ramesh Pachpande, Manjri Varde, Ganesh Pokharkar, Vikas Rathod, Meher Vahid, Rohan Dumbre and Khushboo Madani at the three-day seaside festival.

Vede’s paintings will be based on meditation, a documentation of his personal journeys and a study of human instinct. Varde will paint two works, similar in concept, but different in treatment, depicting the divine feminine and feature Aum-Akshar, a calligraphy form devised by her.

Panchpande will explain the process of using simple tools like charcoal and paper to make paintings. Belgave’s works will highlight a woman’s emotion. He will also showcase his Buddha sculptures for the first time.

“We wanted to curate an event to promote art, to provide a platform for artists to showcase their talent and look for more professionals who can impart creative knowledge to people,” says Rahul Bajaj, director of Le Sutra Hospitality. “Art is sublime, but something that is more complex than art itself is getting the right people to perform it. The biggest challenge was to get all the artists from different genres under one roof,” he shares.

The festival concludes on January 17 when the pieces created will be exhibited from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm for the general public, art enthusiasts and special invitees. The artworks can also be purchased. The organisers hope to make the festival an annual feature in the city.
