Mumbai's powerful get away with loose comments, then why should his tribe have to draw the line, asks comedian Zakir Khan

His fans recognise him as the boy with 'ghamand' (attitude) who is 'haq se single' (single by right), but Zakir Khan uses the aggressive front only to humour his audience. The boy, who made humble beginnings and rose to fame after he won a stand-up comedy competition by Comedy Central, has released a new monologue for a channel and has even been roped in as a mentor on the fifth season of Laughter Challenge. He calls the offer "emotionally satisfying." Interestingly, he turned it down when he was approached initially. In an interview with mid-day, he tells us why.
What are the traits required for a comedian to transition from the online platform to TV?
The comedy remains the same, and no one platform is better than the other. But you need to get the rhythm right. The audience is different, so you need to adjust the meter. It is up to the artiste to connect with the audience. I have never tried television, but I'll give it my all. If people love it, great. If not, I'll happily sit at home. No harm done.
What convinced you to do this show?
Laughter Challenge was an emotionally satisfying offer that I could not refuse. People have advised me to take part in the show in the past. Frankly, when the offer came to me, I thought they were asking me to be a contestant on the show, so, I refused. Then they clarified that they wanted to appoint me in the capacity of mentor.
How have you prepared for the show?
Well, I bought a television. If I'm appearing on it, then my family should be able to see me, right?
Which Bollywood actor do you believe has good comic timing?
Akshay Kumar. I've seen all his films. He is great with comic timing. I also enjoy watching Arshad Warsi. Honestly, I don't judge which comic is better than the other, but simply sit back and laugh. I've laughed at Priyadarshan's comedies too.
Where should a comedian draw the line?
Why should you draw a line in comedy? Comedy is like politics. Wherever politicians draw the line, I believe, is where comedians should too. Whatever liberty is allowed to politicians, should be permitted to comics.
Is there any advice you have for aspiring comedians?
Just be honest. Nothing beats a genuine performance.
What is your source of inspiration?
My stand-ups are a summary of the last four to five years of my life.
