From epic taunts by Maya Sarabhai (Ratna Pathak Shah) to her bumbling 'middle-class' daughter-in-law Monisha (Rupali Ganguly) and son Roshesh's (Rajesh Kumar) hilarious poems, the 2004 sitcom 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai' was a source of endless laughter for television audiences. Which is why the comedy's second edition, now in the form of a web series, was eagerly awaited.
Despite the original cast intact, the JD Majethia production hasn't managed to create the same magic.
"I haven't thought much about the response we've been getting since a few more episodes are are yet to release. Besides, I am not on social media. So, I don't know how the opinion is panning out. I won't deny that there have been mixed reactions, largely positive, but there are a few who feel that the second season is not quite like the first," Shah tells mid-day.
It's probably the nostalgia factor associated with the first season that audiences find lacking in season two. "We were all 10 years younger when the first season released. There is a different worldview now. But while shooting for the second season, the shift was seamless. We had a good time and I feel the script is well-written."
Talking about the show's cult status, she says that its popularity has grown over the years. "Back then, even though it was the funniest show on air, the TRPs were low; no one saw our show. It was only when it came online that people started discussing it. I feel hum log lambi race ke ghode hain. I am sure we will do well [eventually]."
