The controversy surrounding his spat with a contemporary notwithstanding, Kapil Sharma has earned the unwavering adulation of the masses due to his comic acts. In an industry that's quick to typecast actors on the basis of a single successful outing, it isn't surprising that Sharma, having spent several years tickling funny bones, was stereotyped. The actor-producer's recent hiatus from the small screen, he claims, was fuelled by his decision to try something new. "I became popular with my show [Comedy Nights With Kapil], and everyone started offering me roles of similar nature. Despite being offered good remunerations, I refused to take them up," he says.

Given that his Bollywood debut, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, was also a comic-caper, Sharma says he was careful to ensure his second outing was distinct. "I didn't want to bore my audience," he says, ahead of the release of Firangi. Rajiv Dhingra's directorial venture, he says, has a sprinkling of comedy, but has sufficient romance and drama to showcase him in a new light.

"The subject of independence has been tackled differently in it. I also decided to venture into production with it, as I didn't want to compromise on quality." Up next, Sharma intends to test his skills even further. "I want to do a serious role; maybe that of an action hero or an antagonist." Essaying the part may not be a tough feat for him, given that Sharma "did a lot of serious roles" when working in theatre during his college days. The decision to venture into comedy too was accidental, he says.

Following a fallout with co-actor Sunil Grover earlier this year, Sharma apparently struggled with dwindling TRPs of his sketch show. While the comic admits the incident played a role in the decision to take the show off air, he suggests that monotony had also begun to set in: "I opined we needed a break."
