Jr NTR in Devara

Devara Part 1Β review: Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor's film lost at sea

Film: Devara Part 1 Director: Koratala Siva Cast: Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor Rating: 2/5 Even though SS Rajamouli has moved on from the two-part Baahubali, it appears that quite a few filmmakers are still keen to replicate its success. What makes director Koratala Siva’s Devara Part 1 so eagerly anticipated is that it marks Jr NTR's return to the big screen over two years after Rajamouli’s RRR.  The narrative begins in Mumbai, 1996, with a closed-door meeting between top cops, intel chief and the home minister discussing a threat to the country from a wanted criminal during the upcoming cricket world cup tournament. Led by a senior cop (Ajay), the search takes the team to Ratnagiri, a coastal village by the Red Sea aka Lal Samudram. A scary and shocking underwater encounter sets the stage for village elder Singappa (Prakash Raj) to narrate the story of Devara (Jr NTR) to the police team.  Descendants of warriors who fought the colonisers, Devara, Bhiara (Saif Ali Khan), Rayappa (Srikanth) and others from the four villages work as hired pirates to loot cargo of passing ships for Muruga (Murti Sharma) and DSP Tulasi (Abhimanyu Singh). Despite their one-upmanship during the shastra puja rituals, they work in tandem until one incident exposes them to the adverse effects of their chosen profession. That’s when Devara decides that they will not venture into the sea for anything illegal that could in turn jeopardise their own people. However, his moral standing is lost on Bhaira and others, who refuse to follow his orders after a point in time.  Director Siva sets out to narrate an ambitious story, with grand scale and production values. However, the writing is not consistent and after a point, gets rather predictable, more so in the second half. As a result, the pace drags off and on. Most of the sea sequences are aptly executed, though at times they look like they’ve been set in a studio, thanks to the overly grey tones. For most part, the action is on expected larger-than-life lines. One can’t digest Jr NTR flying out of the water like a rocket and the sharks remind you of the rubber crocodiles Amitabh Bachchan wrestled with in Shaan and Ganga Jamuna Saraswati.  Jr NTR doesn’t disappoint. Whether as Devara or the son Vara, the actor delivers a power-packed performance. He plays both roles distinctly without making one look like the other even for a brief moment. He also shows his dancing skills as both the characters at different times and situations in the movie.  Saif Ali Khan plays Bhaira with conviction, but there is only so much he can do in a half-written role like this. For all his cunning and manipulations, Bhaira is not even a pale shadow of Langda Tyagi from Omkara.  Janhvi Kapoor makes her Telugu debut in this film that opens in Hindi as well, as a pan-India offering. However, her character Thangam has barely three-and-a-half scenes, when she is mulling over whether Vara is the man for her, and a romantic number with him.  Shruti Marathe (as Devara’s wife), Prakash Raj, Srikanth, Shine Tom Chacko, Narain, Kalaiyarasan, Murli Sharma and Abhimanyu Singh play their parts well. Ratnavelu’s cinematography makes it a visual treat, and while Anirudh Ravichander’s background heightens the drama, his soundtrack leaves a lot more to be desired.  Considering how the first part pans out, the so-called cliffhanger of the climax doesn’t exactly have you eagerly anticipating the second instalment like ‘Why did Katappa kill Bahubali?’ at the end of Bahubali: The Beginning.

L-NTR-Sridevi; R-Janhvi and NTR Jr

Despite 40-year age gap, NTR and Sridevi worked together in a dozen films

It’s a big day for Hindi film actress Janhvi Kapoor who will be marking her Telugu debut ‘Devara: Part 1’. It is a homecoming moment for the actress as her mother, the late Sridevi has extensively worked in Telugu and Tamil cinema. Janhvi is also one-quarter Telugu owing to her grandmother who belongs from Andhra Pradesh. The actress is also making her debut opposite the Telugu industry’s beloved Jr NTR. The superstar also comes from a reputed film family. Their roots are yet another reason that makes this film special for the duo.  Director Koratala Siva likens Janhvi-NTR Jr's pairing with Sridevi-NTR bond At the trailer launch of Devara: Part 1 earlier this month, Janhvi Kapoor spoke highly of her co-star NTR Jr whom she respectfully addressed as sir. "This is my debut film, and honestly, it feels like a homecoming for me as well. This is my first Telugu film and so it's very very very special to me," she said adding that she would love to do all films with Taarak. Director Koratala Siva gave the biggest compliment to the pair. "They look too good on screen. Down south people feel that after NTR and Sridevi now it is Jr NTR and Janhvi," he said. For those unversed, Janhvi is the daughter of late Sridevi and Jr NTR is the grandson of legendary Telugu superstar NTR. The legendary collaboration of NTR and Sridevi  Sridevi in the true sense is the first pan-India star. She was one of the biggest superstar of her times and conquered every language industry she worked in. The late actress over 300 films to her credit in the five decades that she worked as an actress and 83 of those films were in her mother tongue, Telugu. Janhvi Kapoor’s mother Sridevi and Jr NTR’s grandfather, the legendary NTR have worked together in 12 films. The duo first worked together in the 1972 film 'Badi Panthuluz' where a nine-year-old Sridevi played NTR's granddaughter. Seven years after their first collaboration as a grandfather and granddaughter, Sridevi and NTR were paired opposite each other in 'Vetagaadu'. Released in 1979, NTR was 56 at the time while Sridevi was 16. Yes, they were 40 years apart. But age gaps were not as much as a discussion back then as it is today. The success of Vetagaadu also resulted in Sridevi getting paired with the superstar.  They went on to do a dozen films together.  The duo starred in film like 'Aatagadu', 'Rowdy Ramudu Konte',  'Krishnudu', 'Sardar Papa Rayudu', 'Gaja Donga', 'Kondaveeti Simham', 'Satyam Shivam', 'Anuraga Devata', 'Bobbili Puli', 'Justice Chowdary',  and 'Vayyari Bhamalu Vagalamari Bhartalu'.  While Janhvi and Jr NTR's chemistry in the songs from Devara has been liked by the audience so far, the final will verdict will be out soon once audience watch the film on the big screens.

Jr NTR

Jr NTR reveals first half of 'Devara' was five hours long

The tide has shifted, and the waves are higher than ever in the Indian film industry, as two monumental projects — NTR Jr's 'Devara: Part 1' and Alia Bhatt's 'Jigra' —make headlines after a power-packed panel discussion aptly dubbed 'Devara Ka Jigra'. The event, already hailed as a blockbuster, gave audiences a rare peek behind the cinematic curtains, and what was revealed was nothing short of a sea change for Indian cinema. The discussion, moderated by Karan Johar , brought together the three creative titans of the industry, and in a moment of profound insight, NTR Jr. revealed why Devara would now sail with two parts instead of one. Launching into the story of how it all started NTR Jr said, “We never thought that we are going to make this movie in two parts. I said 'Siva don't stop just keep writing' because there are so many characters.” Jr NTR reveals why Devara has been made in two parts The decision to split the film wasn’t made lightly. According to NTR Jr., as the team dove deeper into the storyline, the layers of emotion, action, and drama kept unfolding. He revealed, “There some characters which we couldn't stop developing. So woh develop hote gaya hote gaya... By the time we finished our first half, we already got in five hours.”  He added, “Because we didn't realise, we just fell in love with that movie. I was like 'No, we need to check ourselves, stop it. Let's write our story, let's finish our story. Let's where, how and what we can cut, chuck or redevelop.' It was a very conscious decision (to have Part 2).”  Karan Johar impressed after watching ‘Devara: Part 1’ Karan Johar, a blockbuster juggernaut for over three decades, was particularly struck by the NTR Jr starrer. He shared, "I went to Hyderabad - Anil (Thadani) and me, and you know we met Apoorva (Mehta) and we saw 30—40 minutes of the (film's) material, and I was kind of blown away because it's a totally different world that he's taken us to. That world is new, it's totally new. But there are elements that are so impactful when you see it." Johar's words were waves of praise, as he further added, "Every time he faces the camera as Devara, there is this kind of magic that just happens. I felt like I've seen all your work, and I felt like with (Koratala) Siva, there is something special. There is something that he taps into you. There is something that comes right out, and I've seen that in Janatha Garage and saw that again in Devara." 'Devara: Part 1' is set for release on September 27, 2024. The film is directed by Koratala Siva and produced by Yuvasudha Arts and NTR Arts, with presentation by Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. Alongside NTR Jr. and Janhvi Kapoor, the film features Saif Ali Khan in a key role.

Actor Siddique

Malayalam actor Siddique absconds after HC rejects bail in rape case

A day after the Kerala High Court disallowed Malayalam actor Siddique’s anticipatory bail in a rape case filed against him by an actress, police continue to search for him, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has decided to arrest him.   However, with the actor’s mobile phones switched off and the police making failed attempts to trace him, Siddique is expected to move a petition against the High Court’s verdict in the apex court, later on Wednesday. Siddique’s son was spotted at his counsel’s office soon after the bail petition was disallowed and it became clear that they were moving the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, reports have surfaced that the complainant in the case and also the Kerala government will file a caveat petition in the apex court to thwart Siddique’s appeal petition. If the caveat petition is filed, then it could be more trouble for the actor, who was last spotted in public on Saturday when he was overseeing the arrangements for the last rites of the veteran screen ‘mother’ Kaviyoor Ponnamma. A police case against Siddique was registered based on a complaint by an actress who accused him of raping her at a state-owned hotel in the capital city in 2016. The actress, who initially hesitated to file a police complaint, later emailed the state police chief alleging that Siddique raped her after she refused to give in to his demands for sexual favours in exchange for a role in a Tamil movie. When this revelation came, Siddique, who was recently elected as the General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) quit the post. Thereafter, the entire committee chaired by President Mohanlal also resigned. Siddique had contended in court that this particular actress has been harassing him since 2019 by making repeated claims on social media that he tried to molest her at a theatre in 2016, and after the Justice Hema Committee report was published, she made a more serious allegation of rape at a different place in the same year. The Justice Hema Committee has unleashed a storm of trouble for the Malayalam film industry. Following its revelations, a few former actresses publicly revealed their bad experiences and the police were quick to act, registering 11 FIRs against various film personalities. At present, those who are in the dock include actor-turned-CPI(M) legislator Mukesh Madhavan, Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, Maniyanpilla Raju, directors Ranjith and Prakash, and production executives Vichu and Noble. Mukesh, Ranjith, Raju, Prakash and now Jayasurya have already got relief from the courts from being arrested. Siddique thus became the first actor who applied for anticipatory bail but failed to get it.

Kerala HC dismisses actor Siddique's anticipatory bail plea in rape case

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Malayalam film actor Siddique in a rape case registered against him based on a complaint by an actress. "Application is dismissed," Justice C S Dias said. The detailed order giving reasons for rejecting the actor's plea is not yet available. Siddique, who was booked for offences under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation), has claimed in his plea that the complainant female actor, has subjected him to the "prolonged campaign of harassment and false accusations since 2019". In his anticipatory bail plea, he further claimed that she had repeatedly, for the past five years, made unsubstantiated and false claims of sexual misbehaviour and 'verbal sexual offers' by him in a theatre in 2016. "But now she has raised totally contradictory allegation of more serious crime of rape at a different place in the same year," he had said in his plea. Siddique had resigned from his post as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following the allegations against him. Multiple FIRs have been registered against many high-profile Malayalam film personalities following allegations of sexual harassment against various directors and actors in the wake of revelations in the Justice K Hema Committee report. The committee was constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case and its report revealing instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry. Following the allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation cropping up against several actors and directors, the state government on August 25 announced the establishment of a seven-member special investigation team to probe them.
