Retired bus conductor objects to dialogues in Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan

Ahead of its October 11 release, Rajinikanth's 'Vettaiyan' has landed in a legal soup. On October 3, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court issued a notice in a public interest litigation (PIL) against dialogues in Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan-strarrer. The petitioner, Mr Palanivelu,a retired Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSC) bus conductor has raised legal objection against some of the dialogues in the teaser of the film. In his petition, he claimed that the film's teaser glorified extra-judicial killing by the police, often referred to as ‘encounters’. Palanivelu further highlighted in the petition that, “Illegal actions of the police, that too the murders committed by them in the name of ‘encounters’, cannot be justified by the dialogue ‘encounter is not only a punishment, but also a preventive action to stop such crimes’.”  He claimed that such dialogues encourgae unconstitutional activities and would shape the audience mind to feel that such encounters are okay. The petitioner filed the petition against three parties- Vettaiyan producers Lyca Productions,  Tamil Nadu government, and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). What has the petitioner asked from the court regarding the film Vettaiyan? Palanivelu has asked the court for an interim injunction against the release of the film scheduled on October 10 until the controversial dialogues are not removed. He had also asked the court to direct the CBFC to change Vettaiyan’s UA certification (parental guidance required under 12) to A (adults). The Madurai Bench has now issued a notice to all three of them to file their responses.  Other issues in the film pointed out by the petitioner Vettaiyan is directed by TJ Gnanavel and also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and Manju Warrier among others. The petitioner also pointed out other questionable statements made in the teaser and final trailer. He highlighted how Rajini’s character in the movie is described as a ‘renowned encounter specialist’. “The word encounter denotes an action of police exercising self-defence by firing at or gunning down a criminal in the event they attempt to attack the police. As such, a policeman can meet such an untoward incident or ‘encounter’ one or two times in his service. No policeman can be a renowned encounter specialist,” he added. “Though the leisure and entertainment media are apart from logic and reality, the same cannot be a reason to impart an anti-constitutional ethos in the minds of viewers. If this is allowed on the pretext that the movie is mere ‘entertainment’, the very foundation of the democratic setup would likely be eroded. If the above unconstitutional dialogues are permitted to be screened, people may soon ask for an ‘encounter’ solution in every criminal case rather than put the offender behind bars by judicial trials. In that event, the offender would become defenceless by losing their fundamental right to defence, ingrained in Article 21 of the Constitution of India.”  The petitioner further highlighted the impact of cinema and its heroes on the audience. “We cannot underestimate cinema as mere entertainment … Glorification in cinema is a complex phenomenon that raises ethical, artistic, and social questions. Characters who engage in violence are portrayed as heroic, brave, admirable, and ‘larger than life’ despite their aggressive actions. In this upcoming movie too, ‘encounter’ violence is portrayed as a saviour of the people.”  “People have blindly followed punch dialogues rendered by stars like Rajinikanth which are irrelevant to the lives of ordinary people. Therefore, characterising Rajinikanth’s role as a ‘renowned encounter specialist’ would naturally promote ruthless Police Raj, rather than faith in judicial systems and other constitutional bodies," he added.

AP Arjun; still from Martin

Martin posters should mention 'AP Arjun' film, says Karnataka HC

Karnataka High Court has granted an interim relief to film director AP Arjun who has been missing from the film promotions of the upcoming Kannada movie 'Martin'. He was missing from the promotions amid a dispute with the film's producer. On Friday, the Karnataka High Court made an interim arrangement in the matter. The court said that the film, 'Martin' should include mention that it is an "AP Arjun" film and that Arjun should be allowed to participate in film promos, provided he doesn't do anything prejudicial/ harmful to the film or others involved in the project.  What went wrong between AP Arjun and producer Uday K Mehta? The Kannada film stars Dhruva Sarja in the lead. It marks the actor's second collaboration with filmmaker AP Arjun. The filmmaker made headlines after alleged that he facilitated certain work contracts related to the film, for a commission. After there was a delay in the VFX work of the film, producer Uday Mehta initiated a legal action against those entrusted with the work for failure to deliver on the agreed-upon terms and conditions. It is then that the team informed the producer said that Arjun was the middleman who got them the job, for which he took a hefty commission. AP Arjun strongly denied the allegations against him. Ever since the case has been in the court of law and therefore Arjun distanced himself from the promotions.  The making of 'Martin' starring Dhruva Sarja took a good three years. Before the delay caused by VFX,  there were rumours of the delay being caused by the cast members including Dhruva.  The release of the film was reportedly doubtful until a few days ago. The makers then got a new investor on board who helped them with the necessary NOCs to get Martin to the theatre.  About Martin The much-anticipated film 'Martin' featuring Kannada’s most loved superstar Dhruva Sarja in the lead role and directed by AP Arjun, is poised to make a monumental impact on the global stage. Originally planned as a pan-India release, 'Martin' is now set to debut in over 13 languages worldwide, a notable advancement for the Indian film industry. The film is set to release on October 11th. 'Martin' features an impressive ensemble cast, including Vaibhavi Shandilya, Anveshi Jain, Sukrutha Wagle, Achyuth Kumar, and Nikitin Dheer. The film's technical crew boasts acclaimed cinematographer Satya Hegde and celebrated music composer Ravi Basrur. The film will also see releases in Dubai in five Indian languages, with potential Arabic and Spanish versions for the South American market. Recognizing the growing popularity of Indian cinema in Russia, the team is also exploring opportunities for Russian and Chinese releases.

Nagarjuna takes legal action against Konda Surekha for divorce comment

Telangana minister Konda Surekha's comment on Telugu movie stars Chaitanya Akkineni and Samantha Ruth Prabhu did not sit well with the respective families and also with members of the film industry. The minister was collectively called out by the affected families and by members of the Telugu film industry including Chiranjeevi, Nani, Jr NTR, and Allu Arjun.  The Congress leader claimed Bharat Rashtra Samiti, working President KT Rama Rao's interference led to the divorce of movie stars Samantha and Naga Chaitanya. KTR issued a legal notice to the minister asking her to withdraw her comment. While she has retracted the statement, Nagarjuna Akkineni and his family has decided to proceed with a legal action against the minister for defamatory comment.  Nagarjuna confirmed the news with Times Now. “I am in Vizag. I am heading back to Hyderabad for action ahead,” he said before adding, “Oh, absolutely! A hundred percent. We can’t let this go. Not at all. I am rushing back with lawyers.” The veteran actor also took to X on Wednesday and wrote, “I strongly condemn the comments of the Honorable Minister Mrs. Konda Surekha. Don't use the lives of movie stars who stay away from politics to criticize your opponents. Please respect other people's privacy. However, there have been various baseless and completely ridiculous gossips on the matter so far." Naga continued, "I have remained silent all this while out of deep respect for my earlier spouse as well as my family. Today, the claim made by Minister Konda Surekha garu is not only false, it is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable. Women deserve to be supported and respected.
