A still from the film

Dear Jassi costume designer curated authentic 90s-Y2K wardrobe for the movie

In the past year, director Tarsem Singh’s Dear Jassi has done the rounds of multiple international film festivals, notably winning the Toronto International Film Festival Platform Prize in its 2023 edition. Now, the Pavia Sidhu and Yugam Sood-starrer is making its way to India. The drama was originally scheduled to release in September, reveals costume designer Komal Shahani. “It got postponed because of Tarsem’s travelling schedule to international film festivals. Once he completes the festival rounds, he and the producers will plan the release date. The aim is to have a 2024 release,” she says. Director Tarsem Singh with costume designer Komal Shahani With Dear Jassi, Singh explores the issue of honour killing in India as he tells the story of the Canada-based protagonist, who falls in love with rickshaw driver Mithu, while visiting her family in Punjab. The drama is inspired by the 2000 episode of Indo-Canadian beautician Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, who was brutally murdered at the orders of her mother and uncle. The costume designer shares that with the story playing out between 1990 and 2000, the director’s brief to her was to be authentic to the era. Shahani says, “[We had] to ensure that every piece, from the dresses to the accessories, was a reflection of the era. The research process was intense, as I spent hours poring over old photographs, magazines, and fashion catalogues from that period. It was essential to pay attention to every detail, from the fabrics used to the stitching techniques.” Before the movie rolled in 2022, Shahani travelled to Ludhiana and Patiala to source original pieces. Baggy pants and oversized jerseys dominated Mithu’s look, while she gave Patiala salwars to Jassi. “I tracked down the vintage jerseys, sported by Mithu, from Lithuania because the ones that were used in 1997-1998 were available only there. The actors have worn almost identical outfits to what Jassi and Mithu wore in real lives.”

You can’t beat Prabhas when it comes to his love for Biryani!

Telugu superstar Prabhas celebrates his birthday on October 23. The actor who has always been a crowd-puller at cinema halls, shouldering the biggest projects, is also a bonafide foodie. His love for biryani is undefeatable given that he also hails from Hyderabad, the capital of this much-loved delicacy that is relished across the globe. On his special day, we look at instances when Prabhas expressed his love for food or via food.  When Prabhas ate 15 types of biryani during ‘Baahubali’  Prabhas had to look like a king during ‘Baahubali’ which meant having a ripped physique and following a strict diet. Elaborating on the same, the film’s director SS Rajamouli told Hindustan Times, “Whatever diet they followed, I left it to them. I didn’t put them under any pressure, but I will tell a funny incident about Prabhas. Once a month, they will have a cheat meal day; that’s a part of their routine because you’re continuously dieting. On that day, you should see the kind of display he has. There are about 10-15 kinds of biryani, just biryani! No exaggeration. You don’t even know those kinds of biryani even exist. Varieties of fish, chicken, mutton... and not just curries, fries. You just can’t imagine the kind of display.” When Prabhas waited till 11:30 pm to eat biryani with Suriya Prabhas made impromptu dinner plans with Suriya, but the latter couldn’t make it in time. However, the Telugu star waited till 11:30 at night to serve the biryani that was cooked by his mother. In an interview with Asianet, Suriya recalled, “We met in the film city; casually, he mentioned, 'I will wait sir, for dinner tonight; we will have dinner together. I thought ok, I assumed it’s hotel dinner or it will come from the production mess. My shooting from 6pm happened to become 8, then 10, and almost till 11:30. I thought I will keep meeting Prabhas; maybe tomorrow I will say sorry to him.” He added, “Then I was walking in the corridor, and his door was opened, and he came out and said 'Sir, I am ready, you take a shower' and I was shocked. It was 11:30 in the night, he didn't have dinner, and he was waiting for me and food was there from his house, he has made his mother cook. I never had such a nice biryani.” Prabhas loves to feed his co-stars  Kareena Kapoor Khan was all praise for superstar Prabhas for sending an "insane meal" for her and his 'Adipurush' co-star Saif Ali Khan. Bebo revealed that Prabhas had sent a bowl full of biryani, dry-fruits loaded kheer, and a gravy dish among other delicacies. At a promotional event for ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, Deepika Padukone revealed, “It got to a point where there was not just food coming from home, there was a full catering service... So the highlight of the day almost became what Prabhas was feeding everyone... And those, who know him well, know he feeds from the heart.” On the work front, Prabhas has ‘Spirit’, 'The Raja Saab', ‘Salaar - Part 2’, and ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ sequel in his kitty.

It was followed by a couple more silver-screen outings, including 'Majili', and finally the Nagarjuna home-production 'Manam', which sealed Samantha's place as a bona fide member of the Akkineni family It was a match made in Tinseltown heaven, it seemed at the time. And she, a talented artiste who had earned her place in the southern film industry -- first in Tamil and later in Telugu. Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu tied the knot on October 6, 2017. The destination wedding took place at Hotel W in Goa, which was attended by their families and close friends.  For the wedding ceremony, Samantha wore a special sari that was owned by Chaitanya's grandmother, D. Rajeswari, wife of popular producer D. Ramanaidu. I think I was there. It was quite relaxed, simple, sweet, intimate and warm. It was everything I thought it would be. When beautiful things happen, I don't feel the need for embellishments. That moment itself fills me. So I didn't feel like it was simple or it was not; it was what it was meant to be, and it was perfect.” She added, “I did always think that I always wanted the whole motherhood experience. I was very clear about it, and getting married. I always saw myself in that setting. I always wanted Telugu-ness to be a part of moments like this. Dulquer Salmaan

Dulquer Salmaan returns to cinema after a year owing to health issues

Dulquer Salmaan is all set to make a grand comeback to the big screen. He was last seen in the Malayalam film 'King Of Kotha' which failed to live up to expectations at the box office and came as a big blow to the actors and the team of the film. However, the actor is now looking forward to the release of his Telugu film 'Lucky Baskhar'. Recently, the actor revealed that he took a brief break from work because of his health issues. He also revealed that he was in pain while shooting for the film 'Lucky Baskhar'. He also said that his poor health was the reason for him not being able to take up projects.  Dulquer Salmaan on his health issues Speaking to TV9, Dulquer Salmaan talked about his break from work and said, "I don't like gaps. This year, I was supposed to do a couple of films. One got cancelled and one didn't work out at the last minute. Then, I had health issues. We [Lucky Baskhar team] had delays because of that. My producer, director and everyone were so supportive. Once when we were shooting and if I was in some kind of pain, they'll say 'Sir, we'll stop now. Don't do this. Go home and take some time off. We'll come back and shoot.'" He continued, "A huge set was erected for Lucky Baskhar. If I insisted on continuing the shoot, they'd say that they don't want to see me in pain. They were so supportive." Lucky Baskhar director on Dulquer's health Director Venky Atluri also revealed how Dulquer would be in pain during the shoot of the film. "We see him in pain. When we see him, we feel that we stretched our work to give him that pain. Actors usually work for 9-10 hours. There were days when I stretched it to 12-15 hours. We feel sad when he is suffering. I could see him in pain and he still wanted to make things work. He'd say it's a huge set and didn't want to make the crew wait. I'd say, 'It's okay sir. Health is important.' We've become a family, it's tough to see a good human in pain. The entire set, including light man, worked like it's their film. For anyone who worked on this project, money was always a second priority," he said.  Lucky Baskhar is a drama thriller, written and directed by Venky Atluri. Dulquer Salmaan plays the titular role, while Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ayesha Khan, Hyper Aadi and P Sai Kumar will be seen in crucial roles. The film will be released in theatres on October 31.
