Resul Pookutty's story is as inspiring as that of Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire. He hails from a middle-class family in a village named Vilakupara in Kerala's Kollam district.u00a0u00a0

Resul is the youngest of eight children. His father, a government employee, wanted him to be a doctor, but Resul didn't get through the entrance test. After graduating in physics, he joined law college in Thiruvananthapuram in 1990.u00a0u00a0

His classmates and teachers at the law college have fond memories of him.u00a0u00a0

"He was an ideal student sincere and committed to studies, but his heart was really in films," says V M Thvahakutty, who taught Resul at the law college.u00a0u00a0u00a0

When Resul was in his second year at the law college, he got admission to the Pune Film and Television Institute.u00a0 "He finished his course at Pune and returned to complete his law degree," recalls S Jayachandran, Resul's classmate.u00a0u00a0

"We studied together for the exams. He was brilliant and I used to tell him that he'd make it big in life," says Jayachandran.
