Celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who adapted Kalki Krishnamurthy's Tamil novel "Ponniyin Selvan" into a two-part film saga, says Indian cinema could benefit by translating great literary works for screen. Ratnam said it doesn't get better if a director is able to reinvent a work by a master writer like Kalki. "The fantastic solution is to take literature and make it into films. Tamil is really rich in terms of the literature... Ideally, you'd like to write something that is far above what you do. It makes your job as a director easy... The closer the gap between literature and cinema, the better Indian cinema will be," the filmmaker said at a session on the fourth day of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here on Friday. Ratnam, who was in conversation with filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon, said he's currently reading Salman Rushdie's novel "Victory City", based on the early days of the Vijayanagar kingdom. "It's stunning, it's like watching a film. The way he (Rushdie) writes, the mixture between fiction, fact and history is so brilliant. It's amazing," he added. Asked if there was any literary character which was close to his real self, Ratnam said, "No one can come anywhere near me. I meant no one could be as confused (as me)." Ratnam, a seven-time National Award-winning artist, said he has always taken inspiration from mythology, be it films "Thalapathi", starring Rajinikanth, or "Ravanan" with Vikram. "Mythology is relevant even today. We can interpret it today, we can relate to it in today's day and time in our issues and problems that continues to fascinate me. If I can find a mirror image here, it pushes me to make it into a film," he added. Recalling his hostel days in Kala Kshetra, the filmmaker said every Friday students there had to attend the dance programme at the venue. "There was always Kathakali which I could never figure out. All of them (performances) dealt with characters which were portrayed as villains normally. "Whether it is Ravana or Karna (in 'Thalapathi'), it was an interesting interpretation which has always been there in South Indian art form. Seeing it from a different perspective." Ratnam also reflected on the use of visual effects (VFX) in cinema today, adding he shot "Ponniyin Selvan" on real locations because he wanted "dust, dirt and sweat" to be visible on people. "Some people do it in VFX. If you're happy with it, good luck to you. I feel VFX helps you when you can't do it in real time. Not the other way around," he added. Asked if "Ponniyin Selvan" could have been a web series, the director said he always imagined it as a full-feature film. He shot the movie in one go but released it in two parts. Ratnam said he wouldn't probably venture into making a web series as it doesn't feel "natural" to him. "Long format storytelling is a completely different art... I'm still very happy struggling with 2.5 hours (of runtime in films). If you give me 6-7 hours to make something, I'll just get lost." The filmmaker, also known for movies such as "Roja", "Bombay", "Dil Se", "Nayakan", and "Kaatru Veliyidai", said he wants his cinema to stand the test of time like Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa". "Something that stays relevant for years to come. That's what I strive for," he added. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. 23 November,2024 01:33 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentA 51-year-old Malayalam actress who had levelled sexual abuse allegations against several male actors, including CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh, on Friday said she was not keen on pursuing her complaints due to "lack of support and protection from the Kerala government". The complainant also alleged "carelessness" on the part of the state government and said she was "mentally exhausted" and therefore, not keen on taking the complaints forward. "I would like to tell everyone that due to the government's carelessness and lack of protection for a woman who has come forward like this, I have suffered more than I can handle. I am mentally exhausted. They are not helping or protecting a woman. "Therefore, I do not want to pursue the cases. It is not because I have compromised with anyone," she told reporters. She claimed she was made an accused in a POCSO case following her complaints against the actors, also including Maniyanpilla Raju and Idavela Babu, and the government did nothing to protect her. "I am innocent. I want justice. I want the POCSO case against me to be probed thoroughly and quickly. If I commit suicide, the government will be responsible for it," she said. Later in the day, she reiterated in a Facebook post what she told reporters in the morning. In the social media post, the woman actor said, "Today, I am planning to make the difficult decision to revoke all cases, including those against MLA, due to the lack of justice in my POCSO case." "Despite my pleas, the police failed to thoroughly investigate, leaving me feeling helpless and betrayed."She further claimed that she was the target of "relentless social bullying" which has taken "a devastating toll" on her mental health as malicious rumours labelled her as a mediator of the sex mafia. "I am standing firm, refusing to be silenced. My demand is clear: resolve the POCSO case first, then I'll proceed with the other cases. Justice must be served. I urge the authorities to take immediate action, ensuring no one else suffers as I have. The POCSO Act 2012 is in place to protect our children. It is time to see it upheld," she said in her post. The Muvattupuzha police had registered the case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, against the woman actor based on a complaint lodged by her relative. According to the police, the incident occurred in 2014. The complainant has alleged she was a minor at the time of the incident and that the actor was running a sex racket. She has alleged the woman actor was running a sex racket and had taken her to Chennai for a film audition where she was presented before many people for sexual favours. The actor had vehemently denied the allegations and claimed that the woman relative owed her some money, and these allegations were to shift attention from her complaint against the high-profile actors. The actress' allegations against the cinema industry professionals came in the wake of the disclosure of the Justice Hema Committee report which revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry, prompting calls for action against the guilty. The Justice Hema Committee was constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case. The complete report was placed before the Kerala High Court which directed that it be handed over to the special investigation team (SIT) that was constituted to probe complaints of sexual abuse in the film industry. Subsequently, 26 FIRs were registered by the SIT in connection with the revelations in the report.

23 November,2024 08:32 AM IST | Mumbai | ANISai Pallavi and Sivakarthikeyan's recent release 'Amaran' became the worst nightmare for VV Vaageesan, an engineering student from Chennai. The issue escalated so much that Vaaggeesan sent a legal notice to the producers of 'Amaran'. The Tamil film 'Amaran' is based on the life of Major Mukund, an Ashoka Chakra awardee, who died during an operation to counter-terrorism. The film is an adaptation of the book series 'India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes' written by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh. 'Amaran' is produced by Kamal Haasan under the banner of Raj Kamal Film Productions. 'Amaran' and the lawsuit against it Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi portray the lead couple Mukund and Indhu. In the movie, there's a scene where Sai Pallavi tosses a crumpled paper at Sivakarthikeyan with her mobile number written on it. But the makers didn't use a fictional or a non-operational number, in reality, the phone number belongs to Vaageesan and it is linked to his bank accounts and official documents. Vaaggeesan has dragged the producers of the film in court and has filed a lawsuit against them. The aspiring engineer is suing them for Rs 1.1 crore. Vaaggeesan described that soon after the film was released on October 31, his phone was flooded with calls and messages and the callers constantly enquired about Sai. Earlier, he could not figure out the reason behind the numerous calls but soon he realised that his phone number had been displayed in the film. Following the trouble, he has demanded compensation for 'untold hardships and mental agony'. He has also asked the makers to remove his number from the film immediately. Vaggeesan further mentions that he has been unable to carry out basic daily activities like sleeping, studying, etc. since the release of 'Amaran'. He also tried reaching out to the film's director Rajkumar Periyasamy and the lead actor Sivakarthikeyan by posting on social media and tagging their accounts but he was disappointed as no one answered his requests. Similar incidents that took place before this case of 'Amaran' This is not the first time that such a case has taken place. Earlier, Nagarjuna Akkineni starrer 'Shivamani' released in 2003, came under scrutiny too when the person owning the number filed a lawsuit against the makers for displaying his phone number without consent causing him immense mental agony.
22 November,2024 05:50 PM IST | MumbaiFilm: All We Imagine as LightCast: Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu HaroonDirector: Payal KapadiaRating: 4/5Runtime: 114 min. Payal Kapadia’s celebrated film gives us a glimpse of the multifaceted nature of urban life. From the highs to the lows, the energy to the solitude, the chaos to the beauty— each character within offers a unique perspective on the urban experience. It’s well past midnight and the camera takes us deep inside the chaotic streets of Mumbai, with people bustling and hustling, trying to ready themselves for the next day at work. We hear people talking about their insecurities… and then the camera focuses on a lone woman in a blue sari commuting home by train and therein begins the story. Prabha (Kani Kusruti) a nurse takes yet another train ride home at the end of another long day. Clinging to the pole, She steadies herself as she allows the pungent night air to stir up her senses. For Payal, the night seems like a magical space where anything is possible. There’s aching sadness, loneliness and pain in “All We Imagine as Light” but there’s also a light that heals. Prabha shares her apartment with fellow nurse, Anu (Divya Prabha), who is involved in a clandestine relationship with a Muslim boy, Shiaz (Hridu Haroon). Prabha disaproves given that there’s a lot of gossip about Anu’s inter-faith affair. But Anu scoffs it all off. Then two events occur. First, Anu brings a pregnant cat home and later, a package arrives from Prabha’s far-off husband, containing, an expensive-looking rice cooker. Prabha’s marriage has been in limbo ever since her husband flew off to Germany soon after the ink was dry on the marriage certificate and she has never heard from him since. So it’s no wonder that she feels disturbed by the gadget’s presence in her home. Parvaty, Prabha’s friend has been unceremoniously ousted from her dwelling and it’s up to Prabha to find her a lawyer. Their lives get murkier as time passes. Whether celebrating the vibrancy of city streets or delving into the melancholy of urban solitude, every sequence resonates with the viewer. The women in this story are longing for love and happiness in a world where everything seems impermament. In the film’s third act, Prabha and Anu accompany Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), on her journey back to the seaside village where she grew up. Parvaty’s seaside village is an oasis where the three women eventually find release. Their individual flights of fancy are what helps transcend this experience to one of high art. There’s poetry and escapism lambent in the depiction but it's what they need that matters. Payal Kapadia’s direction and DP Ranabir Das’ frames serve as reminders that even within the hurly-burly of a bustling metropolis, there is always poetry to be found. Dhritiman Das’ piano score accentuates the melancholia and playfulness inherent in this dramedy of sorts. Kapadia tells us that a new setting could give a person renewed hope. Adding magic realism into that mix was a masterstroke. It made the experience that much more lyrical and redolent.
