Los Angeles: It takes a lot to stop Twitter in its tracks. But a single selfie — a self portrait taken by Ellen DeGeneres at the Academy Awards and featuring an all-star lineup including Bradley Cooper, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Meryl, Ellen, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum and Lupita Nyung’o and her brother — did just that.

Selfie of the year! Ellen uploaded the photograph on Twitter with the caption, ‘If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever’

The image, taken live on television and posted online by Ellen via her Twitter account @TheEllenShow, has clocked 2.4 million retweets and has been ‘favourited’ more than 1.1 million times. And it is still rising.

She uploaded the pic captioned, “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever. #oscars.”

And just 40 minutes later, it smashed the current record set by US President Obama.

No longer on top: US President Barack Obama’s tweet

“We got an email from Twitter and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history,” DeGeneres said on stage, adding, “It’s fantastic. See what we did, Meryl?”

Twitter was back up again, DeGeneres confirmed to the audience, but proudly noted: “It has most retweets ever.”

“I’ve never tweeted before!” Streep, a three-time Oscar winner, gushed later.
