Sound check: Camila Cabello’s latest album, C, Xoxo

Camila Cabello’s “rebranding” of sorts, after her much-talked-about break-up with Shawn Mendes, may not precisely appeal to her followers, as her latest album, C, Xoxo, struggles to find an identity. Cabello comes across as an artiste who cares far too much, or too little, and, in the process, delivers an album whose sonic quality mimics this indecisiveness. On top of my playlist: Vasuda Sharma Bad guy by Billie Eilish:I like the song’s effortlessness, especially that of the hook line; it’s catchy and addictive. Lights up by Harry Styles:The song’s pre-chorus section has an unpredictable change in the chords. I love that. Bailgaadi by Sharma And The Besharams: The track has a laid-back groove, and the lyrics are fun and quirky. Tiny bit of sky by Blackstratblues: It has a lovely vibe.

Taylor Swift lauds Simone Biles for using song 'Ready For It' at Olympic trials

Music sensation Taylor Swift expressed her admiration for Simone Biles after the Olympic champion gymnast dazzled audiences by incorporating Swift's song 'Ready For It' into her floor routine during the 2024 US Olympic Gymnastics Trials. Swift, 34, took to social media to share her excitement over Biles' use of the track from her 2017 album 'Reputation,' which played as Biles executed her routines, including the challenging triple-double tumbling pass. Biles had previously made history with this move at the US Gymnastics Championships in 2019. "Watched this so many times and still unready. She's ready for it tho," Swift commented after a full clip of Biles' routine was shared by NBC Olympics and Paralympics. Biles, 27, concluded her performance with Travis Scott's 'Delresto (Echoes),' featuring Beyonce. Despite facing challenges during the beam event, Biles' strong showings on the floor, bars, and vault secured her first place in the women's qualifying rounds, as per Page Six. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has been captivating her own audience during the European leg of her Eras Tour, currently preparing for a performance in Dublin, Ireland. Reflecting on her album 'Folklore,' Swift connected its storytelling nature to the Irish landscape during her concert at Aviva Stadium. "Folklore in general, it just belongs in Ireland," Swift shared with her audience after performing 'Cardigan.' "How I imagined the album world looking [was like] Ireland. Storytelling with lots of different characters. You guys have that on lock, too. That's very Irish, the storytelling," she said as per Page Six. Swift recently wrapped up a series of highly anticipated shows in London, where she delighted fans with special appearances, including a cameo from her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. According to Page Six, her tour will next take her to Amsterdam, Netherlands, for three consecutive shows before continuing to Germany. Will Smith drops new song

Actor-rapper Will Smith has released new music with a completely fresh sound. The four-time Grammy-winning rapper-actor, 55, has been on a solo music hiatus since dropping his 2017 EDM track, Get lit, which came over a decade after his last studio album, 2005’s Lost and Found. However, the Bad Boys: Ride or Die star has returned with a brand-new offering titled You can make it. Smith slapped Rock for making fun of wife Jade Pinkett’s alopecia The uplifting single, backed by the Sunday Service Choir of Kanye West’s Jesus Is King fame and assisted by Fridayy, finds Smith back in his rap bag as he shares an urgent message for listeners. “You are in the smoke and the fire, tight rope on the wires. I see you’re broken and tired,  and all your hope is expired”, he raps on the track. “So many tests for the flesh, exhausted, gasping to catch your breath, walking through the valley of the shadow of death and when you think you’ve got nothing left, keep going.” According to reports, later in the song, the Summertime rapper seems to turn his encouraging advice to himself, alluding to dealing with past personal battles—like the infamous 2022 Oscar slap incident with Chris Rock—with lyrics like, “Believe me, they tried to bleed Will Smith. In the rearview, I see adversity was the gift. Out of the madness, out of the maze, out of the saddest into the rays, the darkest of nights turns into day and every storm runs out of rain.” Smith’s return to music comes amid his box-office success with his latest Bad Boys instalment, also starring Martin Lawrence. Courteney Cox is fine with turning 60

Courteney Cox, who turned 60 in June, is not upset about getting older and doesn’t think time has changed her “one bit.” “I’m fine with it. I love my life, and I love that I’m still working after all this time. I’m feeling very grateful. If anything, I’m probably more compassionate now,” she told in a magazine interview. The actor said, “I speak my mind, but people who know me can handle it. With me, you certainly get what you get.” The Scream actor, who has a 20-year-old daughter, Coco, with her former husband David Arquette and is in a relationship with Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, feels her creative nature has helped her stay young at heart. She explained, “Overcoming challenges, being creative, and thinking outside the box is what makes life exciting. It keeps you young.” Looking back on her life, Cox regrets being a “comparative person” while working on Friends with Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and the late Matthew Perry. “The one thing I wish I hadn’t been is a comparative person. There’s a lot of stuff that can mess with your ego, being on a show in an ensemble like that. It’s hard. It was a lot of learning for me. I wish I hadn’t ever spent time comparing,” she said. Celine Dion

'I am: Celine Dion' review- The trauma of Being Celine Dion

Film: I am: Celine Dion   Cast: Celine Dion,Director: Irene TaylorRating: 3/5Runtime: 102 min “I don’t want to sound dramatic but I could have died” - these words uttered by Celine Dion lend context to her struggles with growing instances of painful catatonic paralyses known as Stiff Persons Syndrome, a rarest of rare conditions that affects one in a million. The documentary comes with a warning, “The film contains powerful scenes of medical trauma. Viewer discretion is advised.” So you are basically set-up for a mournful portrait of the Diva struggling with the rare neurological disorder that made it increasingly difficult for her to sing and perform at shows. Irene Taylor’s depiction allows for all the sadness, hurt and regret to come through. The sadness that she cannot hit the ‘high notes’ she was celebrated for, anymore. The hurt that this could happen to her soon after the loss of her beloved husband, at a time when she was most vulnerable emotionally. And the regret that she has had to cancel or truncate several shows without exposing the true nature of her condition. Taylor’s crew even happen to catch a shocking scene involving Dion in the midst of a very painful seizure. Celine Dion reminisces “ When your voice brings you joy you can be the leader. People remarked that Celine Dion was the one who sang the highest note ever. Now with SPS its difficult to reach the high notes.” Interprescing curent camera capture with past home video and archival footage, Taylor paints a picture of the Diva that is heartrendingly poignant. We see her dedication, persistence, and hard work that have earned her the success she enjoys today. For a girl who grew up with 13 brothers and sisters in a small province in  Quebec, Dion achieved a pinnacle that is pretty much hard to emulate. The documentary gives us glimpses of the good times with her Manager and husband Rene, moments when she was pregnant, some of the time she spends with her three children, the episode she did with The Jimmy Fallon show and several moments from her recordings and concerts. Short versions of songs featured here include   ‘Power of love,’ ‘Rag Doll,’ ‘Le ballet,’ ‘Treat her like a lady,’ ‘Ashes,’ ‘All by myself,’ ‘Alive,’ her duet with John Farnham in Australia, ‘My heart will go on,’ ‘I am,’ and ‘L’amour’ from Carmen. This documentary portrays the superstar as human and physically flawed. It highlights the immense pressures that Dion, gifted with extraordinary talents, faces behind the spotlight. It’s difficult to see her world fall apart, as she grapples with health related and professional challenges, unsure of her next steps. We see her trying her best to get back to being ‘The Voice.’ Her recent tryst with a film role in the Priyanka Chopra featured romcom ‘Love Again’ and the recording of the song for that film bring home to us the difficulties she faces while trying to get her voice back on track. She talks of the need for pills to get through her performances. This film was shot over a period of 12 months and we see Dion venturing out from her Las Vegas mansion only three times. We see her comforting herself by revisiting the past in her 12,000-foot warehouse containing all the items and accessories she used for her numerous performances. Witnessing her struggle to sing through her pain gives us an inkling to the strong will, resilience and dedication that has honed her craft. “Love affection, attention, music is my foundation. I am because of my family,” she says in one of her candid moments on camera. Her devotion to her craft and love for family is pretty much evident. It’s her battles with SPS and her struggles with her voice, that have become the crux of her existence now. “If I can’t run I’ll walk. If I can’t walk, I’ll crawl” - this statement clearly tells us that Celine Dion is fighting strong and not willing to quit anytime soon!

A still from A Quiet Place

'A Quiet Place: Day One' movie review- Merely a Serviceable thriller

Film: A Quiet Place : Day OneCast: Lupita Nyong'o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Cain Aiden, Jennifer Woodward, Elijah UngvaryDirector: Michael SarnoskiRating: 2.5/5Runtime: 99 min. This film, a prequel to the super successful John Krasinski directed franchise ‘A Quiet Place,’ hopes to recreate the origin story by depicting the initial alien invasion. It’s clear from this attempt that Krasinski is definitely a far superior thriller director. The manner in which he captured destruction and created suspense was so vivid that it became hard to forget. Sarnoski, even though technically proficient, is unable to recreate that kind of potency.“Day One” promises a more expansive look at the apocalyptic mayhem but it doesn’t deliver it with any depth or consistency. The narrative informs us in the opening moments itself that sound levels in NYC is regularly 90 decibels. But the subsequent sequences fail to capture the contrast of a hustling and bustling city needing to stay quiet all of a sudden. The people characters though are governed by their behaviors. With more than a million and a half people living on the island of Manhattan, it’s hard to understand why Samira (Lupita Nyong’o), a Stage 4 cancer patient, and Eric (Joseph Quinn), come in for special treatment. Both have no survival instincts. Samira goes against the tide of people aiming for the waterways and Eric appears to be following her for no reason at all. Samira is an abrasive anti social person and it becomes difficult to empathise with her situation while Eric comes by his panic attacks by chance. While both Nyong’o and Quinn are rivetting in their emphasis and presence, there’s little we learn about their characters all through the film.   The aliens - mostly in the foreground or rampaging away from the camera, still seem gruesome. The city comes in as one of the main character’s here. Visuals and soundscapes of the city are life affirming - before the onset of the aliens. But there’s nothing new here. The story isn’t as focused on one specific family as the previous ones. There’s no backstory as such - just the bombastic arrival of the aliens and the havoc they cause thereafter, in New York City. There’s no interesting lore to hold on to either. We don’t get to know why the aliens have intruded on Earth and how suddenly everyone recognises ( even the cat) that being silent is the only way to stay hidden from their opaque eyes and acute senses. The monsters are incredibly inconsistent in their reactions to sound. There are times when we see them instantly attacking when the slightest squeak is heard  and then there are times when the lead characters go about their business and yet no alien attacks them directly. Even the cat (named Frodo)’s behavior is uncharacteristic for a feline. After the initial meows we don’t get a sound out of the Frodo, and furthermore the cat keeps going in and out of the frame and managing to come back to it’s owner everytime in spite of the devastation in the city. To top it Samira has a dying wish - to have a pizza, and the narrative makes that aspect it’s prized ambition. It’s a trivialising construct that weakens the drama considerable. The sound design has clarity, cinematography is heavily atmospheric and while some CGI is great, some parts aren’t. Overall this is just a implausible, though serviceable thriller that plies its tricks with engaging effect.

Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry’s death could lead to multiple arrests

The investigation into the death of Matthew Perry is coming to a close and multiple individuals have been linked to the late actor’s acquisition of the lethal amount of ketamine found in his blood, according to a news report published this week.  The Hollywood Reporter pointed to publications when stating that on Wednesday, two law enforcement sources confirmed the investigation’s end is near, and prosecutors will soon decide if charges will be filed against those linked to the Friends star’s procurement of ketamine. The criminal probe underway since May includes investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the US Postal Service. Detectives are tracing the actor’s procurement of the illegal drug, which has been used recreationally for decades but has recently been discovered as useful in the treatment of depression.  On October 28, 2023, Perry’s body was found after he’d drowned in his hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home. The lethal dose of ketamine is believed to have caused him to have cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office. The examiner had stated that the amount of ketamine found in his blood was about the same as what would be used during general anaesthesia.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
