James Cameron knows very well he is not the only filmmaker to deal with child cast members’ changing appearances over the years. During a recent interview, he explained  why he opted to shoot the recently released Avatar: The Way of the Water at the same time as the third instalment of the series that is scheduled to arrive in 2024, and also some portion for the fourth part, as growth spurts for the younger performers could change the way they look.

Giving an example of Jack Champion, who plays Spider in the films, Cameron shared that the actor was 13 when The Way of Water began shooting, but is now 18. “Otherwise, you get — and I love Stranger Things — but you get the Stranger Things effect where they’re supposed to still be in high school [but] they look like they’re 27,” said the Avatar maker. He added, “You know, I love the show. It’s okay, we’ll suspend disbelief. We like the characters, but, you know.”

In a pre-release interview, Champion spoke about the connection he formed with Cameron over their four-and-a-half years of shooting. Calling the filmmaker “a cinematic genius,” the actor said, “After so many years, he has become like a father figure to me.” Considering that he has literally grown up in front of the cameras, he also compared Avatar: The Way of Water to a “time capsule”. He said, “It is cool to see my teenage years on screen, but I can still get immersed in the world of Pandora.”
