Los Angeles: Director JJ Abrams and the 'Star Wars' team premiered the first trailer of the movie at Star Wars Celebrations which gave the first look of Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Chewbaca to thousands of fans who had gathered in Anaheim for the fanfare event.

The trailer, with a voiceover by Skywalker (Mark Hamill), begins with the visual of the wreck of a Star Destroyer on a planet called Jakku -- not Tatooine as previously assumed.

"The force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it," says the voiceover as the camera shows the charred remains of Darth Vader.

Then Skywalker's mechanical hand reach out and touch R2-D2, and hand off a lightsaber to someone else.

"You have that power, too," he says.

The trailer of the Disney movie then cuts to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) flying with his squadron of X-Wings, a quick slash of the new lightsaber, Rey and Finn (Daisy Ridley and John Boyega) running from an explosion, and images of Kylo Ren and the new Stormtrooper army.

Millennium Falcon also makes an appearance but the loudest cheers were reserved for Han Solo and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), as Ford's character announced, "Chewie, we're home."

The events in the new movie take place 30 years after "Return of the Jedi".

Abrams, 48, revealed that he had initially did not want to get involved with another franchise and said no to "Star Wars."

But eventually, he said, he decided "it was impossible to say no."

"But while there are moments of horror, the reality is I've never had more fun in my life working on anything and the opportunity far outweighs the risk. I can't wait for you to see the movie," he said, adding that they tried to shoot on real locations instead of taking the help of CGI too much.

The movie will hit theatres in December this year.
