Technically the second film in the franchise without the late Paul Walker in the cast and also the beginning of the trilogy meant to close out the franchise altogether, this film makes up for the loss of it's ace with a slew of A listers in the cast including Kurt Russell, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren. F Gary Gray has also roped in Clint Eastwood's son Scott Eastwood in a role that could give him far more visibility than even he could have expected. All that vrooming , grunting and spillage continue to haunt the series from start to finish , this one trying to go one better on the previous experience. But it's just not happening.

Based on characters created by Chris Morgan, Gary Scott Thompson and now legendary to the die-hard fans at least, this film dives into Cuba for a meaningless car race before it fire-starts it's espionage thrills globetrotting into New York City and the icy plains of the artic Barrents Sea.

Family is the key here. Dominic Terretto (Vin Diesel) and Letty are on their honeymoon ,Brian and Mia have retired from the game and the rest of the crew are also around when a mysterious woman also known as The Cipher (Charlize Theron) gets Dom to break his promises and hurtle them all into a double agent sort of action drama that goes all out to create fulfillment for the adrenaline junkie. But not before draining your energy with pointless wisecracks and endless drivel.

The narrative is fragmented like most in the series and there are jump cuts and continuity breaks that could hurtle you into the after life if you were not paying close attention..but it's the humor here that works up some semblance of affection. Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson ) and Deckard Shaw( Jason Statham) are the guys who rub off each other and generate a laugh or two. Also the sequence with Shaw and the baby in a plane makes for a terrific comedy routine.

The series has it's cars but the stunt action is much more than that. Planes have begun playing a major role in the last few outings with submarines, ships, torpedoes adding weight but this one has a large chunk of the narrative set inside a plane. The action choreography also includes a number of cars being remotely programmed into creating a diversion –which includes piling up on the road and falling off from towers. The CGI is obvious, the music is not loud and grating as the previous one and the performances fill in with comic book expressions. The narrative in fact feels lazy and stilted. Charlize Theron tries her best to look like and act like a venomous seductress black widow but fails . Kurt Russell is wasted here, Scott Eastwood plays officious like a joker while Helen Mirren just about manages to light up a few distinctive moments with her august presence. The script is fatally flawed and the direction seems out of sorts. Frankly there's not much to hold on to here.
