Discussion around the tedium resulting from playing the same character in our long-running TV soaps is done in abundant, but Hollywood actor Robert Patrick argues that series in the West offer sufficient fodder to prevent monotony.

"In TV, it's possible to churn out the best for a character because you invest in it for so long," says Patrick, whose American drama, Scorpion, is prepping for an Indian TV premiere on AXNâÂu00c2u0080Âu00c2u0088next week. Patrick says it is the stronger storyline of American shows that enable artistes to dig deeper into their roles. "There's an evolution to each role. You are able to spend more time with your character and live the part, even though the situations keep changing. With changing scenes, your character is also forced to advance."

Meaningful ventures, he says, is reason behind the opportunity given to actors to invest in their role. "I started working in films in the '80s. Then, TV wasn't a chip of what it is today. Shows like Sopranos (1999) showed people that the platform can be a space to showcase great stories. In the future, TV might outshine films. It is storytelling at its best."
