Alan Rickman carved out a niche for himself with his distinctive screen presence and voice and was best known for playing Professor Severus Snape in the 'Harry Potter' film series.


Playing Snape with barely repressed, sarcastic menace, Rickman appeared in all seven films of the series from 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' (2001) to 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II' (2011).

Alan Rickman is remembered for several memorable moments from 'Harry Potter', but there is one heartbreaking quote in particular for which he will 'always' be loved.

Hans Gruber in 'Die Hard' (1988)

What took his career upward was his villainous part as the German terrorist in the high octane-action thriller 'Die Hard' (1988) featuring Bruce Willis (a role he reprised in a flashback in 'Die Hard with a Vengeance' in 1995).

Jamie in 'Truly Madly Deeply' (1990)

Alan Rickman portrays his softer side in 'Truly Madly Deeply' as Jamie, who dies, leaving his lover Nina (played by Juliet Stevenson) heartbroken, only to return as a ghost.

Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' (1991)

Long before Alan Rickman played Hogwarts' potions master, he gave us a villain we'd love to hate: the evil Sheriff of Nottingham in 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' (1991). Rickman won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in the film.

Colonel Brandon in 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995)

But he was not always the bad (or the apparent bad) on screen with roles like Colonel Brandon, who romances the younger sister (Kate Winslet) in Ang Lee's adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility' (1995).

Alan Rickman plays an archangel, Metatron, the Voice of God in Kevin Smith's comedy 'Dogma' starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Alexander Dane in 'Galaxy Quest' (1999)

Alan Rickman essays the role of Alexander Dane in this parody of TV series 'Star Trek' and its fandom, also starring Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver. The film garnered critical acclaim and achieved a cult status through the years.

Alan Rickman plays Emma Thompson's husband Harry, who contemplates cheating on her, in the British Christmas-themed romantic comedy 'Love Actually'.

Marvin in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' (2005)

Alan Rickman's distinctive voice was used for Marvin, the Paranoid Android, in a 2005 adaptation of Douglas Adams' cult classic 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'.

Judge Turpin in 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (2007)

Alan Rickman essayed the evil Judge Turpin in the critically acclaimed Tim Burton musical horror 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' alongside 'Harry Potter' co-stars Helena Bonham Carter and Timothy Spall and actor Johnny Depp.

King Louis XIV in 'A Little Chaos' (2014)

Alan Rickman portrayed King Louis XIV in the British period drama 'A Little Chaos'. It is his second and final directorial, first being 'The Winter Guest'. Alan Rickman collaborated with his 'Sense and Sensibility' co-star Kate Winslet in the film.
