Lately Hollywood seems to be infatuated with the one night stand genre. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake gave us 'No Strings Attached' the same year Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher gave us 'Friends with Benefits'. I may have mixed up the names and the actors but the films were exactly the same and it is impossible to distinguish between the two.
This time we have 'Two Night Stand', and all I can offer is ten observations for you to decide whether you should see it in theatres.
1) The film tries very hard to be a Nick Hornby tale without the intelligence, insight and sharpness of his work. Those who have seen High Fidelity or read any of his books will want to walk out after half an hour.
2) The film tries to cater to the modern younger audience, but it mistakes modern younger audience for ‘dumb younger audience’.
3) The plot of the film itself is as ridiculous as it gets – boy and girl meet for a hookup, when the girl tries to leave the next day a snow storm gets her stuck in the house with him. Even a tiny bit more effort into getting the lead characters to meet would have been more interesting.
4) Once the plot is set, the rest of the film is just the two characters talking. But this isn’t a Before Sunrise where the two exchange smart deconstructions of love and romance. They talk teenage stoner rubbish that would embarrass anyone who has been in love.
5) Apart from the dull dialogue, the story itself is painfully predictable. You can see what happens next from a mile away. In fact, you don’t even need to think very hard to know what happens to the two in the end.
6) Despite Miles Teller in the lead role, the acting is downright awful. Teller tries to pull a John Cusack and fails not just because his lines are terrible but also because he seems to know this film is dead on arrival.
7) The female lead is supposed to be quirky and funny , but Analeigh Tipton has zero comic timing, and is not much of a leading lady.
8) For a rom-com, the film has a seriously low amount of romance and comedy. The biggest laugh the film gives you is a Benjamin Button one-liner. And the biggest romantic moment in the film is the two bickering over women needing to sleep with the lights off.
9) The ‘friends’ of the leads are exactly what you expect from a bad rom-com; and Kid Cudi assures you that rappers will continue to become horrible Hollywood actors.
10) The film is neither smart enough to be interesting, nor dumb enough to be harmless. It’s a great big ball of nothing.
