We've often heard actors going through multiple rounds of auditions and look tests before bagging a role. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with Dane DeHaan, who got lucky with bagging the title role in 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' within 15 seconds of meeting with director Luc Besson!
It so happened that Luc's team set up a lunch meeting with Dane, without telling the latter that it was for casting of former's upcoming sci-fi movie. Luc, who is a huge fan of Valerian and Lauraline comics on which the movie is based, on the other hand, knew exactly how his lead character Valerian will look like. So when the duo met, within seconds, Luc decided in his head to cast Dane.
Luc quotes, "It was pretty easy to cast for this particular film, after reading 29 albums, I know Valerian. I can come in a room and say, 'Hey! He can play Valerian'. I know Valerian too much. And I love Dane as an actor, and I thought it could be good. I went to have lunch with him and after like 15 seconds, I knew he was it. He smiled, he said hi, and that was it. And for next two hours, I had to pretend, speaking about the script, asking him if he wanted to so do the role. But for me, I was just praying that he will say yes."
Luc adds on, "That was the first time I met Dane and he didn't know why I was meeting him, and I came with entire Valerian thing on my head, which is good because he was natural, he didn't know what to expect."
