Los Angeles: "Fawlty Towers" star Andrew Sachs, who played hapless Spanish waiter Manuel in the BBC sitcom, has died aged 86.

The actor died on November 23 after a four-year battle with dementia, reported Entertainment Weekly.

Sachs starred opposite "Fawlty Towers" creators John Cleese and Connie Booth in the sitcom, which aired in 1975 and 1979 and chronicled the farcical goings-on at a hotel on the
English Riviera.

Cleese remembered him as "a very sweet gentle and kind man and a truly great farceur"

He wrote on Twitter, "I could not have found a better Manuel."

Born in 1930 in Berlin, Sachs moved to England with his family at age of eight to escape the Nazis, settling in London.

His screen credits included "The Saint," "The History of Mr. Polly," "That Peter Kay Thing," "Coronation Street," and "Quartet". In 2014, Sachs published a memoir, "I Know Nothing: The Autobiography."

Sachs is survived by his wife and three children.
