Bollywood and Television actresses have ruled the world of 'naagins' ever since mythological films were made. To top the list, Reena Roy, who was foreseen as one of the first famous 'naagins' of all, played the role of a serpent in the film 'Nagin' in 1976, opposite Jitendra. Apart from her, there was an ensemble cast of Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Rekha, Kabir Bedi and Mumtaz too in the movie.
If it was Reena Roy who set the trend of 'ichchadaari naagins', Sridevi is the name that rules our mind when it comes to the stories of 'naag devta' and 'naagins'. How can anyone forget the song 'Main Teri Dushman, Dushman Tu Mera' (I am your enemy, you are mine) from Naagin? Sridevi looked mesmerising while dancing to the tunes of Amrish Puri.
The pretty lady of tinsel town, Meenakshi Seshadri, who shook cinegoers with her breathtaking role in and as 'Daamini' too ruled the mythological world of serpents. Meenakshi Seshadri appeared in the 1989 film Nache Nagin Gali Gali in the role of Meenakshi Nagin. Currently away from the limelight, Meenakshi Seshadri gave us some of the most appealing characters on the silver screen.
In the year 1990, we saw a film based on the story of the reincarnation of people in the form of a snake. One such film, 'Nag Nagin', starring Rajiv Kapoor and Raza Murad, did release at the box office but was termed as a super flop film back then. Mandakini had played a 'naagin' in this one!
In 1990, we saw one more movie based on the stories of snakes, starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla. Well, Juhi didn't exactly play the role of a 'naagin', but Khan's character is shown to be blessed with magical snake-charming powers. The film, 'Tum Mere Ho' didn't do well at the box office, and now it is considered as one of the worst films by Mr Perfectionist!
In the year 2002, we saw 'Jani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani' starring Manisha Koirala, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Sunny Deol, Armaan Kohli and Sonu Nigam. Manisha played the role of a 'naagin', and Armaan played the 'naag' - her love interest. This film too was based on the storyline of reincarnation and vengeance, which faced the wrath of the audience on its box office numbers.
Who would forget Mallika Sherawat as 'Naagin'? She too appeared in the role of Yashwadi Nagin in the adventure horror film 'Hisss' in the year 2010, and it became a huge topic of discussion. The film proved to be a flop at the box office, but Mallika's look stole all the limelight in the movie.
In 2013, Dimpy Ganguly had appeared in the show 'Chandrakanta' as a 'naagin'. Though the television actress failed to create a stir, this show barely lasted for two years, calling it an end in the year 2013 itself.
Not only the films, but the effect of 'naagins' has also ruled the world of television. After Dimpy's 'naagin' avatar, it was Ekta Kapoor's 2015 show 'Naagin' where we saw the beautiful actress Mouni Roy in the character of a serpent. Before stepping into Bollywood, the actress has been a part of the serial from season 1 to season 2.
After winning the hearts of the audience through television, Adaa Khan reappeared in a new avatar, and this time, it was as a 'naagin' - Shesha. The actress joined Mouni Roy in the same serial and garnered a lot of attention from the audience.
Karishma Tanna left us all thrilled as she showcased her talent as a 'naagin' in Season 3 of Naagin as Ruhi.
Qubool Hai actress Surbhi Jyoti ruled Season 3 of 'Naagin'. She is one of the most popular actresses on television and as Bela and Shravani, Surbhi won the hearts of many.
For the gorgeous Anita Hassanandani, Naagin is her second home. She had played the popular character of a 'naagin' Vishakha, aka Vish, in Naagin 3 and was also part of Naagin 4.
Jasmin Bhasin, best known for her show Dil Se Dil Tak, played the role of a 'naagin' called Nayantara in the Ekta Kapoor show in Season 4. "The thought that came to my mind when I was called for 'Naagin' was, 'Oh my god!' The next one was 'I have to become thin now to look like a nice, hot naagin. I was like, 'Jasmin now you have to stop eating butter chicken and pizzas!'" And she started eating healthy to nail the character.
Nia Sharma was part of Naagin's Season 4. "Naagin demands commitment, versatility and I am playing the role of Brinda, who is simple and soft-spoken in nature. She avoids fights even when people are harsh towards her," said Nia.
Rakshanda Khan was part of Naagin 3 as Sumitra, a 'naagin', 'Naagrani' of Nidhog clan. She gets killed by Naagrani Shravani who was blessed with more powers.
Sayantani Ghosh was part of Naagin 4, as Manyata, a 'naagin' princess from Sheshnag clan. She played Brinda's (Nia Sharma) mother and Nayantara's (Jasmin Bhasin) adoptive mother.
