Dimple Kapadia was born on June 8, 1957, in a Gujarati family. Her father, Chunnibhai Kapadia, was an entrepreneur. Dimple is the eldest of four siblings. Her younger sister, Simple Kapadia, too was an actress. She passed away of cancer in November 2009. Dimple Kapadia was discovered by Raj Kapoor, at the age of 13. He later launched her in 'Bobby'. She, however, retired from acting after marrying Rajesh Khanna and stayed away from the showbiz for twelve years to raise her two daughters, Twinkle Khanna, who was born in 1974 and Rinke Khanna, who was born in 1977.
Dimple Kapadia married superstar Rajesh Khanna in 1973, six months before the release of her first film, 'Bobby'. But they separated in 1984, though they did not complete the divorce proceedings. The couple united during Khanna's last days.
After a decade of absence, Dimple Kapadia returned for a successful inning in filmdom with the hit 1985 film 'Saagar' and proved her mettle with an eclectic mix of commercial and parallel cinema – 'Aitbaar', 'Arjun', 'Ram Lakhan', 'Batwara', 'Kaash', 'Rudaali' and 'Lekin'.

A lesser-known fact about Dimple Kapadia: Ramesh Sippy's Saagar was touted to be Dimple's comeback vehicle, but the release of the film got delayed and, instead, Zakhmi Sher (1984) turned to be her first movie to hit the screens as her comeback.

A lesser-known fact about Dimple Kapadia: The actress did a screen test for 'Saagar' and fared very badly, literally shivering through her act. But, director Ramesh Sippy showed faith in her and signed her on for the film, which turned to be a major success at the box office.
