The funeral proceedings were led by Himanshu Roy's wife Bhawna Roy. The body was released on Friday evening after a post mortem at GT hospital. Bhawna also left for the hospital along with her husband's remains.

Traped in the tricolour, Himanshu Roy was sent off with full state honours. Top IPS officials told Mid-Day that the police found a suicide note from Himanshu Roy's house which stated, 'No one is responsible for my suicide.' In a statement MN Singh, former CP said, 'I am shocked with the incident, we have lost one of the best officers from police force.'
Roy's death came as a shock to many. He is believed to have been one of the top cops in the city. He was from the 1988-batch Indian Police Service officer, and had served in elite groups of the Maharashtra Police, including as chief of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and in the Crime Branch. Roy is credited with being involved in the solving of a string of prominent cases, including the murders of journalist J Dey, fringe Bollywood actor Laila Khan and law graduate Pallavi Purkhayasta in Mumbai
Roy's wife, Bhawna, who is seen here in white, looked visibly shaken as she attended the funeral proceedings. Officials said Roy shot himself in the bedroom. Upon hearing the gunshot, his wife Bhavana and two domestic helps rushed in. He was then taken to the Bombay hospital
A band also performed at Himanshu Roy's funeral. According to the Mumbai Police, Roy's disappointment with fighting bone marrow cancer for the last two years might have led to him taking the extreme step, which has also been mentioned in his suicide note
Among the various political leaders who attended the funeral ceremony was RPI chief, Ramdas Athawale. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra posted on social media, 'Sad to hear about the shocking demise of Himanshu Roy, He was an officer known for his bravery and integrity. His contribution to states law and order will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family.'
Roy's driver constable Mahadev Maske was the first person to contact the control room of Mumbai Police and tell them about the incident. The control room alerted local police who rushed to Roy's house and Bombay hospital

Apart from solving several high-profile cases, Himanshu Roy was also part of the team which pursued leads related to American-born Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist David Headley, who was involved in carrying out a recce mission ahead of the 26/11 terror strike. During his tenure as the ATS chief, software engineer Anees Ansari was arrested for allegedly planning to blow up the American school at the Bandra Kurla complex

Life had come full circle for Roy, because Colaba - the place he had grown up in - was now under his jurisdiction. According to Jayant Patil, state president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) he spoke to Himanshu Roy, on Thursday, the two parted on the promise to meet again in a week. Former ATS chief Himanshu Roy's suicide also shocked everyone at the gym he went to for past 16 years. QI Gym officials and staff members said Roy had helped many of them. The staff has put up posters of their favourite member on the premises as a tribute to him
A gym administrator of the gym Roy went to, Dhiraj Pardeshi, said, 'He was our member for the past 16 years. He had so much positive energy and had helped many of us. Whenever he found any of us worried, he would always ask why and try to guide and motivate us. He was here even on Thursday. He talked to all of us as always. We had seen him recovering from the disease. He was happy about it.'
Senior IPS officer Himanshu Roy refused to undergo surgery for the cancerous tumour in his brain, a senior doctor who was associated with his treatment said. Prior to his death, Roy had been battling cancer. He was diagnosed in 2015, but continued his duty until 2016, after which he took a long-term medical leave the same year. Earlier, he had taken treatment at H N Reliance Foundation Hospital but later, the cancer had also spread to his brain in the form of a tumour
Many of his relatives have a background in medicine. After getting suggestions from one of them, he began taking treatment under an oncologist known to him in Pune. But four months ago, his test results showed that the cancer had also spread to his brain and surgery was the only option. But, he refused it and opted for medication
Forensic surgeons at Grant Medical College and GT Hospital who carried out Himanshu Roy's autopsy told mid-day that they found a suspected secondary cancer that had impacted the only kidney Roy was surviving on (his first cancerous kidney was removed in 2000), and that the disease had spread to the pelvic area. They added that the bullet entered via the oral cavity, and exited from the back of the skull
Himanshu Roy was considered one of the most upright police officers, having vast knowledge of the crime scenario in the city. Roy had cleared his chartered accountancy exam but, eventually, chose the force over account books. He then cleared his civil services exam and became an IPS officer on August 21, 1989. His legacy will forever remain etched in the city's history.
