Vidhu Vinod Chopra claims Hollywood said 12th Fail should have been Oscar entry

Two months ahead of the Oscar nominations, director Kiran Rao and producer Aamir Khan are travelling the world to campaign for Laapataa Ladies, India's official entry to 97th Academy Award. But according  to their colleague, filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, many in Hollywood were hoping for another Indian film to be selected.  The feminist dramedy, starring Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava and Nitanshi Goel, is eyeing a spot in the international film category. During a masterclass at the ongoing International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Chopra claimed that his 2023 directorial venture was actually the choice of several artistes, including those working internationally.  "Can I tell you one thing in return that so many people have told me, including people in Hollywood, that 12th Fail should have represented India at Oscars not whatever went," the filmmaker said. He further asked the audience if they agree with him. "Say yes or no, do I care? What I care for is did I make a good film or not. So please don't give so much importance (to awards). Awards are people outside of (the industry) who are acknowledging you for God knows what reasons. So please don't bother,” he said. Not just Oscars, Chopra also believes even back home, National Awards shouldn't be taken too seriously. As he spoke about his 1989 acclaimed drama thriller, Parinda, someone in the audience asked, "Why thrillers don't get National Award?" To which the the filmmaker replied, "You are giving too much importance to the National Awards."

Vinta Nanda slams Imtiaz Ali's statement at IFFI 2024 on women safety

Veteran television producer Vinta Nanda, who was among the first women to break their silence and amplify the MeToo movement in the film industry a couple of years ago, slammed ace filmmaker Imtiaz Ali for his recent statement on women's safety during the 55th IFFI International Film Festival in Goa.  Vinta Nanda was one of the earliest female celebrities to come out with her MeToo story, along with actress Tanushree Dutta in 2018. She had accused actor Alok Nath of sexual harassment and rape in the 90s. Vinta Nanda asks who selected Imtiaz Ali to speak for women Vinta’s note on Instagram read, “Imtiaz Ali should stop pontificating about what women face in the entertainment industry. Naturally, Kareena Kapoor is safe because she is privileged. And, he surely must know that the casting couch exists! Why has IFFI Goa selected him to speak on behalf of women? Is it to whitewash the truth? If men like him had the courtesy to abstain from speaking on a subject they have no experience about, one will believe that change is indeed taking place.”           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Vinta Nanda (@vintananda) She wrote in the caption, “It’s shocking to see reports of @imtiazaliofficial making all sorts of statements about women’s issues on an important industry platform like @iffigoa With zero experience, he should have abstained from speaking instead.” What Imtiaz Ali said at IFFI Imtiaz Ali recalled how Kareena Kapoor felt safe on the sets of ‘Jab We Met’. He shared, “Kareena was ready for the shot and on the top berth in a railway compartment. She had to mumble in her sleep in the scene, and we needed extra lights on the berth. I asked her to come down until the crew members finished putting the light on. She said that I would keep lying there and they could just put the light on.  “Three men went up and put it while standing on the lower berth where she was lying down. I asked her, ‘Are you sure and comfortable?’ She didn’t understand what my problem was. She said, ‘Abhi kon utrega aur phir chadhega!’ And that’s because she felt so safe with those three men hovering over her to put the light on. Nobody looked at her wrong in any way,” Imtiaz added.

Alia Bhatt in Highway

A 'Highway' crew member tried to be around Alia while she attended nature’s call

Ace filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who brought out the acting prowess of Alia Bhatt to the big screen with the 2014 film ‘Highway’, recalled creating a safe space on set after a crew member created trouble. Imtiaz was speaking at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa during which he opened up on maintaining decorum on a movie set.  A ‘Highway’ crew member tried to get near Alia Bhatt Imtiaz Ali shared that ‘Highway’ was filmed in a village which meant the cast and crew did not have access to vanity vans or other amenities that they usually would. He revealed firing a crew member who tried to get near Alia while she changed or used the loo in the open.  "Alia had to change or go for nature’s call in unusual places. One crew member tried to be around her during that time, and I immediately sent him back. This happened thrice in my career, but not anymore. Times have changed drastically. Actresses are really safe on sets now. The film industry in Bombay is remarkable for the way it treats its women. With 200 people working in a unit, it is a very safe space for them,” said Imtiaz.  Imtiaz Ali on casting Alia Bhatt for ‘Highway’ Imtiaz met Alia at the screening of 'Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' (2012) albeit he had not seen her debut film ‘Student of the Year’. During an episode of Mid-day’s Sit With Hitlist, he shared, “I started talking to her and I realized that there's some warmth in her. Emotional quotient was very high and I was very drawn to talk to her and she was talking very nicely. I started to talk to her about deeper things about things like home, society, and sh*t like that just to draw her out into that kind and I started to hear her true voice.” “I always wanted to cast a slightly elder, like a woman of at least 30. I didn't want to cast a more mature woman who's had experiences of the type that she was going to talk about in the film. I didn't want a young person in the film, but after meeting her, I realized that what I was looking for was the emotional depth, which this little girl has,” he added.
