Smita Patil Birth Anniversary 2023: When Mithun Chakraborty said he 'broke internally' after the 'Chakra' actress' death

Mithun Chakraborty and Smita Patil

Smita Patil was one of the finest actresses of Hindi cinema and stage. In a career that spanned just over a decade, the actress appeared in over 80 films in both Hindi and Marathi languages. Patil died at a very young age of 31 owing to childhood birth complications. Despite that, the mark left by the actress with her work continues to live among us.

Actor Mithun Chakraborty had once revealed how he was affected by her demise. During his appearance as a special guest on the reality show 'Dance+6' in 2021, Mithun Chakraborty shared his love and admiration for the late Smita Patil. On the episode, Mithun challenged the contestants to dance on the songs chosen by him. Contestant Dhananjay from captain Shakti Mohan's team performed on Mithun's given favourite song 'Ke Pag Ghungaroo Bandh Meera Nache' from 'Namak Halaal'. He praised the contestant and said: "My mind was blown the way you took off! If a dance act starts well, everything about it looks good. It was a paisa vasool performance."

Further expressing why the song is his favourite, he recalls the late actress Smita Patil who starred in the film. He said, "The reason this song is my favourite is because when the song was shot, the disco theme was a trend. Undoubtedly Amit Ji has aced it. But my favourite part about the song is Smita Patil. She was my sister and when she passed away, I was broken internally. Post that, I did not make anyone my sister in the film industry."

Patil made her film debut in the year 1975 wit Shyam Bengal's 'Charandas Chor'. Even though she appeared in several mainstream films, she became one of the leading actresses of parallel cinema, a New Wave movement in India cinema. Her most notable roles include Manthan (1977), Bhumika (1977), 'Jait Re Jait' (1978), Aakrosh (1980), Chakra (1981) and her first and only Filmfare Award for Best Actress, 'Namak Halaal' (1982), 'Bazaar' (1982), 'Umbartha' (1982), 'Shakti' (1982), 'Arth (1982), 'Ardh Satya' (1983), 'Mandi' (1983), 'Aaj Ki Awaaz' (1984), 'Chidambaram' (1985), 'Mirch Masala' (1985), 'Amrit'. She won National Awards for her role in Bhumika and Chakra.
