Even as he leads thriller Aazam, Jimmy Sheirgill on gravitating towards meaty supporting roles

Jimmy Sheirgill

Earlier this week, the makers of Aazam: Rise of a New Don unveiled the film’s first look, featuring Jimmy Sheirgill. Shravan Tiwari’s directorial venture, which revolves around the succession battle as crime lord Nawab Khan barely has a fortnight to live, sees Sheirgill as a dreaded gangster. Given his penchant for thrillers, saying yes to the project was a no-brainer for the actor. “It follows a series of events that happens over one night, and shakes up the crime world. There’s more to the story than meets the eye, and that is the beauty of the script. I am fond of thrillers, and this one [appealed to me], especially the well-written dialogues. I read the entire script in one go,” says Sheirgill. He is joined by Abhimanyu Singh and Indraneil Sengupta in the movie.

While Sheirgill leads this drama, the actor hasn’t shied away from taking small parts of late. From De De Pyaar De (2019) to Judgementall Hai Kya (2019), he says it has been a conscious decision to judge roles by their impact, not screen time. “I am taking up roles that have a small part in the narrative. How many lead roles in films can a person do? Over the years, I started focusing on roles that are memorable to viewers [regardless of the screen time]. Now, interesting roles are being written for almost every character,” he says, adding that the script and director’s vision are paramount to him.
