In January, Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal tasted success as their maiden production Girls Will Be Girls bagged two awards —the Audience Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category, and Special Jury Award for Acting—at the Sundance Film Festival 2024. Now, with the festival rounds done, it’s time for them to take their film to the audience. While Indian viewers will have to wait a while, the Kani Kusruti and Preeti Panigrahi-starrer is set to hit the marquee in France, followed by a UK release by June-end.

Director Shuchi Talati’s Girls Will Be Girls garnered attention in international circles after its double win at Sundance and its screening at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. That it is led by Kusruti, who also features in Payal Kapadia’s Grand Prix-winning film All We Imagine As Light, only fuelled further interest. Chadha is naturally excited about the movie’s international release as she says, “It’s a moment of immense pride for us. The film’s themes are universal, and we are thrilled that audiences in France and the UK will be among the first to experience it. I can’t wait for people in India to watch it as well.”

Set in a boarding school, the drama explores the life of 16-year-old Mira, played by Panigrahi, and her tense relationship with her mother.
