Known for her penchant to bring alive iconic characters, Kangana Ranaut has added one more to her kitty. She will play Indira Gandhi in writer-director Sai Kabir’s film. The untitled political drama, which will also be produced by Ranaut, is not a biopic of the late prime minister.

“Its story will help my generation understand the socio-political landscape of current India,” says Ranaut, who considers Gandhi as the most influential leader in the history of Indian politics. Kabir met Kangy in Bhopal, where she is shooting for Razneesh Ghai’s Dhaakad, to discuss the project. She is said to have given her nod immediately. At the beginning of her career, she had dressed up as Gandhi for a photoshoot. “Little did I know that one day I will get to play her on screen,” she says.
Earlier, Kabir and Ranaut had teamed up for Revolver Rani (2014). The rest of the cast has not yet been finalised. In 2018, Vidya Balan had announced a web series based on journalist Sagarika Ghose’s 2017 book, Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister, in which Balan would play Gandhi. It was said to be helmed by The Lunchbox (2013) director Ritesh Batra. But the project did not see the light of day.
Kangana is currently filming for action drama Dhaakad in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. She also has Tejas and second installment of Manikarnika franchise, titled Manikarnika Returns: The Legend Of Didda, in the works.
