It’s heartbreaking that in the movie-making hub that is Mumbai, one of its most iconic cinemas, Eros, had to shut down in 2017 due to poor ticket sales. But six years on, the city will be getting its lost jewel back, albeit in a new avatar. The landmark Churchgate cinema is being revamped as an IMAX theatre. It will
become the second IMAX screen in the island city, after the one in Lower Parel.

Initially acquired by Inox Cinemas, it is now a property of PVR-Inox, following the merger of the two multiplex chains. An official from the PVR-Inox group confirmed the development, saying, “Eros Cinema will reopen as a single-screen IMAX theatre.” While reports suggested that it would be converted into a multiplex with some non-
IMAX screens, mid-day has learnt that it will continue to be a single-screen theatre with a seating capacity of over 300. There is no clarity yet on when the theatre will reopen, considering there is a long process to procure licenses.

Built in 1938, Eros not only enjoyed pride of place as one of the first single-screen theatres of Mumbai, but its Art-Deco structure also made it a landmark building in the city’s landscape.
